Computer Crash.

B. Procctor wrote on 5/21/2014, 7:54 PM
My computer crashed two days ago and I have everything recovered except Vegas Pro 12. I have the original discs all the way back to Vegas 8 (versions 8, 9, 10, & 11)

I've tried to reinstall version 12 to no avail. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated...do I have to have all of the original Vegas pro versions installed to install Vegas Pro 12.

No. Every version of Vegas is a separate program. You can have any mix of them on your PC. Are you getting an error message?

I was able to download the original version of Vegas Pro 12. The error message above is the one I get when I start the program. First problem I've had with Vegas Pro 12.

Well, for starters you've got BUILD 367 of VP12. The latest build for VP12 is BUILD770. You might want to try that.

With your mention of "recover"... was your crash severe enough that you reinstalled your OS or your entire system from a backup image? If the latter, you may need to do a "clean install" of Vegas, especially if you've tried to install an earlier build than you had before. I'd do a search in the forum for "Vegas clean install." SCS had once published instructions for cleaning old partial installs and left-behinds in the registry.

Also, did you copy/paste that error report? Or retype it? Your fault module line includes: C:\Windows\WinSxS\and64_microsoft.vc90.crt....

Are you sure it doesn't read "amd64" instead of "and64"? I ask because A quick search returned NO results for such a path in an error message.

Not a total crash, I've been able to load most of my programs and I was able to reinstall the latest version of Vegas build 770 ...fortunately it was in my downloads folder. But, Vegas still crashes on start up.....It starts to load OK, then gets to were the plug ins are loading (Creating video plug-in factory) it stops loading and I get the error message.

I typed it and you are correct, it is "amd64"

"Unmanaged Exception" is always a driver or DLL error. I've never seen it otherwise.

Steve...I'm not a computer whiz so how would I fix that?
larry-peter wrote on 5/23/2014, 9:02 AM
I would suggest starting by following the path in Fault Module to see if msvcr90.dll actually exists there. Viruses, registry errors and wrong/old installations of Microsoft Visual C++ can cause errors with this DLL, along with many other things. If that file exists in the path given, I would first do a "clean" Vegas install with removal of old registry keys. That's still my suspicion about the error - that it's registry related.

BUT...If, after your crash you did an OS reinstall, check to make sure you have the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Package on your system.

Edit: I am running WIn 7 on my system and have had to deal with this in the past. I have no idea if it pertains to any other Windows versions.

When you see a Microsoft DLL implicated in a crash, like in this case, more often than not it's some other DLL that called a Microsoft function with a bad parameter and thus triggered the crash indirectly. So I wouldn't blame the MSVCR90 library without more evidence, or go to extreme measures like reinstalling the OS.

Instead, the most pragmatic solution is to upgrade to VP12 build 770 which has a LOT of crash fixes vs. build 367, as Grazie suggested. Hopefully the crash you're seeing with 367 is a known and already-solved problem.

If b770 still has the same crash, then I'd like to see an uploaded crash report so I can check what actually triggered the MSVCR90 crash. To do that, please put a easily searchable string (like my name or "B. Procctor") in the message box the Error Report client and click Send.

I didn't lose my operating system and I was able to download the build 770 upgrade with the same results.

Bummer. If you send Sony a crash report with your user name in the message, I'll look for it in the database.

". . download the build 770 upgrade with the same results."

Pooo....

Do as Chris suggests . . . .

Good News...Got everything back up and running. Installed the latest version of Vegas 12, runs fine no hang ups.

I tried to update DVD Architect version 5.2 to 6.0. I had it prior to my crash using the serial number for DVD Architect 5.2 (which is up and running again), it wouldn't let me do it, it says my serial number has to begin with 1DJ.

I appreciate everyone's help. The fix was as simple as resetting my Bios to default and deleting my old user profile and setting a new one.

Thanks...Again

I feel like an idiot...that's what you get when you lead the cart before the horse...I looked in my software under my account listed above and there was my serial # for DVD Architect 6.0.
