Nearly every case of computers locking up or rebooting during rendering are due to flakey hardware that can't handle 100% CPU utilization for extended perids of time. Look for a good burn-in test program (such as the "Torture Test" option in Prime95) to see if that's the problem with your system.

I would check the mem chips. While dos and windows will report good memory some more programs designed to check the mem chips my report bad chip.
It is mostly the hardware when computer lock-up.Vegas do take the computer to the test.

Also make sure your power supply is sufficient for your system. After updating to an Athlon processor, the computer would work fine until I did something processor intensive like MPEG encoding. Then it would crash. After moving to an Athlon approved power supply, it worked find.

I've only had Vegas freeze (and most other programs) when something is overheating (mostly my CPU, used to my GPU over heated too). Open up your case and point a fan at it. if it doesn't freeze, chances are it could of been over heating.

Unfortunately, I started having this sort of problem with my new ADS dual-link drive enclosure. The whole system didn't freeze but the drive started throwing "delayed write" errors and eventually just stopped working.

Putting the drive in a cooler case solved the problem.

Heat and power supply seem like major players.
