I don't know if this is your problem, but I had this happen with a bad memory DIMM. Might want to download a memory checker and test your RAM.

Power down, open up your box and take a can of compressed air and blow the dust off the motherboard, and especially the CPU heatsink and fan. Also make sure that nothing is blocking the air flow of the CPU fan.

Rendering is generally pretty CPU intensive, which can cause the CPU to heat up and if you're right on the edge temperature-wise, the increased heat can push your CPU over the edge.

I schedule a periodic dust patrol of my machines.

I'd also (if possible) setup a motherboard/CPU temp monitor. I have one that came with my Asus board that even keeps a record (in graph form) of my heat. Went something goes wron't that's the first thing i check (a program may of comne with your laptop).
