Confusion - Vegas 2 performs better than 3...?

Ben  wrote on 2/27/2002, 8:07 AM
I've recently upgraded from Vegas Video 2 to 3. Am totally happy with everything...apart from its performance. Loading a Vegas 2 session in 3, I'll get glitching and playback problems which I didn't get in version 2. These are generally sessions that were pushing the limits of my (limited) hardware anyway, but the fact remains that - with the same buffer settings, etc - they were playable in Vegas 2 and are not in Vegas 3. Does anyone know what might be going on here? I'd have expected no change in performance between the two versions.

On a related matter, I'm thinking about upgrading to a Pentium 4. I've heard all the issues about Pentium 4s and audio, but is Vegas Video 3 optimized for Pentium 4s? I'm currently running a pretty antiquated Pentium 3 500, so definitely need to upgrade to something; the question is would I be making a mistake going to a 4. Maybe someone at SoFo knows the answer to this one?

Thanks again
Ben

May I ask what version of Windows you are running, Ben?

Yeah, sorry, I didn't give many specifics. Running Windows 98SE, 128MB RAM, 2x Western Digital 20GB hard drives, Pentium 3 500, M-Audio Audiophile 24/96.

In fact, the only change I've made to my system which I can think could have made a difference is the installation of Direct X 8.1 when I installed Vegas 3. I was running version 7 until then. I don't know if that helps at all...

If it's at all possible to go back to DX7 I'd love to hear if that solves your problems. What glitches are you referring to?

Just tried to install DX 7 - unfortunately it doesn't let you do it as it detects you've got a later version installed.

The glitching I'm getting is like you get when your system can't handle your track count, number of plugs, etc. But as I said, although the session is pushing it a little for my computer, it ran just fine on VV2. Weird.

M-Audio, huh? I've read some ugly posts about M-Audio and Vegas not getting along. I'm no computer wiz, but do you suppose having the latest driver for your M-Audio card would help? It's the Deltawin9x_22.41 revised 12-15-01.

Pup - maybe, although I do have the latest driver. The fact remains that a session that ran fine on VV2 glitches on VV3. I really would love to know what's going on here...

Cheers

We tested Vegas 2/3 performance extensively before version 3 shipped, and we saw no falloff anywhere in the new version. If you can provide some exact details we'll take a look.

There is a (working) DirectX uninstaller somewhere in the Net. You could get one useable with DX8, uninstall it and then install DX7.

Uninstalling DirectX8, or hacking aound the DX8 requirement turns Vegas 3 into an unsupported product. Do this at your peril!

Hmmm. So it could be, then, that it's DirectX 8 causing these problems...? (I'm assuming from Sonic EPM's post that VV3 would run under DirectX 7? I'm not using any of the video functionality, by the way).

"I'm assuming from Sonic EPM's post that VV3 would run under DirectX 7?"

We have NEVER EVER tested Vegas 3 under DX7. The product will not even install if you don't have DirectX8.

Try a different M-audio driver - the .41's were useless for me and my delta 1010. In Win98, use the .27 driver. Make sure you completely uninstall all the old drivers first.

It is NOT a direct X problem. I had the same problem with the .41 M-audio driver. All is good now with the .27s.

Alternatively, WinXP seems pretty good for me.

I have the same problem. I work only with audio and I used Vegas Audio 2b; last week I changed to VV 3 and the problems beguns. The same project that I worked without problems in VA 2 I can't work in VV; lot of dropouts... Monitoring de CPU usage, I saw that VV needs more power than VA 2. My system is:
Athlon T-Bird 850
256 Ram pc133
HD IBM Deskstar 60 GXP
Maxi Studio Isis XL

seems to be a problem with certain soundcards and / or drivers. All I can suggest is try different drivers, or to a different OS, like WinXP.

I had this problem when experimenting with VIA motherboard based sound, also A Gadget Labs Wave 8*24, and M-audio Delta 1010 (but only with certain drivers)
