Do you mean a second computer monitor or a reference monitor for the video?

Actually is both, Sorry if it didn't make sense.

The reason I asked is because I asked the same question a year or two ago. The t.v. monitor will not work as a computer monitor due to resolution issues. Although I can't give you the full explanation, the two monitors work differently and the t.v. will not provide, imagewise, what is needed for computer work.

I'll try to find that thread and post it here for you.

Using the firewire out is the probably the best way. Feeding thru the firewire to a tv at the other end. Using a camcorder as a passthru will work. What I use is a JVC -vr10 which has the firewire input and output that to a tv. THen I can preview my project as a client. I assume thats what you might be doing now. Otherwise, if you have a video card that allows composite video out as well as a monitor, that may work also, although I dont have that kind of video card to tell you for sure.

To add to what the others have said, and since there are about a bazillion posts on this topic, doing a search may be more overwhelming than helpful…

Most folks use a TV (or better still, a broadcast monitor) with Vegas to view the Video Preview Window externally. This is different than having a dual monitor setup where the Windows desktop is stretched across two computer screens. Actually for Vegas, both of these options are great.

The prescribed method to get external preview on a TV with Vegas is via an OHCI compliant IEEE 1394 (Firewire) card. It should be noted that not all firewire cards are OHCI compliant.

The physical connection is as follows:

Computer’s OHCI Firewire port > D/A converter > External Monitor

A DV camcorder with pass-through is commonly used for the D/A converter, or a dedicated D/A converter like Canopus ADVC-100 can be used. Connection from D/A converter to External Monitor is typically done using s-video or component, rather than composite, if the option is available.

When the External Preview icon in Vegas is selected, the Vegas video preview is sent out through IEEE 1394 while the audio portion is played through the computer's sound card.

It is important that the external monitor be properly set up (calibrated) when using it to apply video FX such as color corrections, otherwise your editing decisions will be in error. HTH

Is it necessary that it be Firewire out?
I have a Pinnacle Studio AV/DV PCI card for capture purposes and I was hoping to use its S-Video Out to a TV monitor - any thoughts?
Many thanks

It should do the trick, if you can figure how to get V5 to output to the S-video port. Maybe it will work without doing anything.

With a lot of effort you can use the S-Video output for printing to tape. I don't believe it's possible to use this for the preview monitor though. Maybe in Vegas 6 ...
