I'd rather have one fair mic than two cheap ones so I am looking for a mic to use both for voice-overs and on-camera interviews. What criteria should I consider other than looks?
Stereo/Mono?
Condenser/Dynamic?
Large/small diaphram?
Phantom?
Durability? etc.
Combo = 2 situations with only marginal results. If you're doing on camera interview, you should have something like a boom stand/boom pole/boom op, zeppelin/rycote for wind noise and senn mkh 60 shotgun for mobile situations. Neumann 150, 185 and stand for stationary applications.
Look into audiotechnica for less expensive alternatives.
Oh, mono, and the neumanns are very sensitive to handling/boom noise/moisture.
I'm no expert here but I think the two requirements are mutually exclusive to get a good solution for both situations. Probably what would make a good on camera mic could be pressed into service for hand held interviews (we've done it with just the mic that comes with the PD150). A good mic designed for hand held use wouldn't be so good on a camera though.
