Constraining an effect to one portion of frame

Hi there,

I'm a new VV3 user, currently seeing what it can do, can you help with a query I have.

Imagine my scene, if you will, it's a shot from the top of the stairs looking down at a mirror, the protagonist falls down the stairs and through the mirror.

I'd like the mirror to do something after it's been fallen through, either the swirl or spherise would be good. But I am having trouble containing the effect to just the glass of the mirror.

I think it's something to do with masks, but I'm not sure.

Thanks in advance for your help,

V

You're on the right track with the masks. You can create a mask as a bitmap image that fits the area of the mirror, and apply this mask to a second copy of the clip in a track above the primary video track. Only the unmasked portion of this track will show, the effect effecting this area. Outside the masked area the uneffected clip from the lower track will show through.

Hi Mike,

You might try making a mask using a captured still-frame of the shot, or using the Vegas background generator to create something the shape of the mirror (you can control shape/size with Deform FX).

You might want a white area the same shape as the mirror, to cut a hole in the shot, exposing another track with the modified mirror-shot, or the inverse: use the mask to isolate the mirror on the upper track and modify that.
