Content for mobile phones

I've got lost within all these codecs, specs and formats. There's the H.264 AVC (Advanced Video Coding) - also known as MPEG-4 Part 10, H.263, H.261, 3GP or whatever.

Can someone please explain to me what I need to produce video for mobile phones? Is it possible in V4 or V5, just right out of the box? Also, please elaborate on the correct workflow of such production.

It's seldom I've seen such an overwhelming response. :)
Please, anyone?

Tommy, the codecs themselves, other than the wmv codecs, don't reside within Vegas. If you install a third party system, then you can author for a CDMA phone within Vegas when those codecs install. I'm just starting to do a paper/study on this subject for someone else, so my knowldege is currently somewhat limited.
Last month's issue of Electronic Musician had an excellent article on the subject, but it gave few resources on the video side, mostly ring-tone related info.

Thanks for trying. :) I know about the codecs. I just don't know WHAT codecs, when to use them, what pixel dimensions and other stuff needed to succeed in this matter.

Please keep us updated when you've got the solid knowledge. Meanwhile I'll surf around and get educated.

I did a quick search and found a fantastic resource center over at Nokia. There's extensive information on EVERYTHING. This could be great for your paper/study, not to say my own endavours. I couldn't find anything good at Ericsson but I've emailed them about it.

Click around for software, case studies and a whole lot of other info on this.

This is becoming popular here with the rollout of the 3G network, seems you can download your movie into the phone and watch it while you travel. Think they need mpeg-4.

Yes, mpeg-4 it is (and H.263). I've skimmed through some info in the links above. Great stuff. The OS and the media player in the mobile phones differs from device to device. Nokia have some free software to convert avi, mp3, wav and all that to standard 3GP files that should play fine on all of them. You can also use TMPGEnc with some templates found on the "coolsmartphone" website, or just read the articles for help on other ways.
