Control Opacity of track with the one above it

I've got a long form play (1.5 hrs) that employed a three camera setup. Two of the cameras are SD (4:3) used for closeup work. The third was a locked down HDV camera used for the wide shot of the stage.

I've decided to mix the aspect ratios and deliver the finished product in 16:9. If I had planned ahead and put the 16:9 on the top track, I'd have no problem, but instead, after 8 hours of editing, I have a problem to be solved - how to keep the left and right sections of the 16:9 from showing through when the top tracks are selected.

I'm really a noobie on the use of parent child compositing, but I assume I should be able to put black generated media on tracks under the 4:3 tracks and have each video track control the black generated media track below it - ie, when the composite level of the video track goes to zero, the generated media's composite level goes to zero also. How do I do this - or, if there is another way to accomplish this, how??

Many Thanks,
Ralph

If all of your edits are in place, you could duplicate the track and you should get another copy with the envelope still in place. Then just replace the footage on the new track with the black generated media.

Simple answer, by simply click+dragging the track header you can move a track up/down.

As to your real question, I'm not too certain how to achieve that outcome easily.

Thank you Edward, that is elegantly simple!!!

Now Bob and I both know how to do it :-)

Thanks,
Ralph

Indeed and a big personal thank you to Edward.

If the edits had not already been in place, I would have suggested what Bob suggested. Actually, I probably would have taken it a step further and suggested using one of the multi-cam options that are available.
