Controller for Vegas Pro 16

KeyplayerG wrote on 1/21/2019, 12:25 PM

Hello All,

I haven't been around here since Sony controlled Vegas. I was using Vegas Pro 12. Recently, I upgraded to Vegas Pro 16 (Build 361) on my Win. 10 Pro 64bit PC. I am a Media Composer and I would like to use my Euphonix Artist Series Controller (MC Control, 2 Mix Units & Transport) to control Vegas via the HUI/Mackie or Generic MIDI Protocols.

Since I'm not a video editor, my needs are very basic (Copy/Paste, Markers, Text, Render, etc. but MOSTLY ALL OF THE MIXER AND TRANSPORT CONTROLS). Currently my MC Control "Sees Vegas Pro" but, as yet won't actually control any of the features. Can anyone here talk me through the necessary setup to get these to work together? I would like to be able to just flip between my DAW (Steinberg Nuendo 8) and Vegas and use the same controls to work both programs.

Failing that, could anyone suggest a video controller that will run Vegas? I hate working with a mouse on these kind of programs. Thanks in advance for any replies/advice and Happy New Year.

Vegas wants to see MIDI in/out, what shows up in your MIDI set up page in Preferences?

Once I know my MIDI is ok, I will go to External Controller page and either clik on what is showing up (if my controller - might say virtually MCU) or "add new" and you probably want to use whatever Mackie is available. Once that is showing in the device slot, double clik on that - it will take you to another setup page.

In your MIDI in/out - hopefully you have that available, so choose the relevant in and out interface. And/or hit the scan button.

once you have a device being seen by Vegas, go back out of preferences to the main drop down menu "Options" and make sure "External Control" is clicked. You may have to do this proceedure more than once, restart computer, devices, what have you to get this all linked, but try everything, it usually will work even if not on the first attempt, keep repeating at least two or three times. Believe me, that has worked for me many times.

Thanks so much for the replies. I did a lot of what you said initially, as the process is similar with most Apps. But, unlike any other App, I have found Vegas the most frustrating in this regard. I've been trying since Vegas 7, 9, 12 to present to get this program to lock to the controller.😧

Here are some screen shots to help you see what I've done so far.

The MIDI tab shows Mackie Control in 1 & 2. Am I limited to just 16 channels? I opened a 3rd port to go out to 24 faders in the External Controller tab. But the Midi tab only seems to except 2. It keeps deleting one of the 3 ports.

The External control tab let me put in the Mackie Control. But it hasn't shown up in the list since I added it to the Control Devices List. I don't know why that is, since the Generic Control is still showing in the list.

Here's the Mackie Control Device Port 1 (Chan. 1-8). I hit scan to see what, if any control it'll pick up. Nothing changed on the hardware screen to indicate a connection.

What do I have to do to get this to work?

I found this old Video on YouTube. I tried following the steps but, apparently, there have been some changes along the way to iteration 16. How do you add commands to the External Control Menu? Specifically, I'd like to add a simple Fader volume command in the mixer section. But there's no listing for fader in that section. The top box has the control options for what ever is in the bottom box. I don't have any foot switches. I would like to swap that, in the top box, with a fader volume control to control a fader assigned in the bottom box. HOW DO I DO THAT?

I still need help with this. As you can see in my screenshots above, Vegas can see my controller via Emulated Mackie/HUI control. But I still can't establish a handshake between my hardware and the workstation.

I'm looking to do the same thing with Vegas that this guy is doing with Adobe Premier.

This is a HUGE deal for me! Since I'm not a video editor, I really need to be able to keep the workflow the same as when I'm working on my DAW. If the controls are the same between workstations, then I can focus on the new techniques I'd have to learn to do a particular task, as opposed to having to learn everything all over again from the ground up.

Has anyone here had any success with Artist Series Hardware and Vegas?

Sometimes resetting the hardware controller, (like to factory default settings, or just a hard reset of some sort) will yield results. Also, you can deinstall the Midi and Controller from Windows and then try to reinstall, and maybe follow with a Vegas reinstall. Sometimes these sorts of things are just necessary. (Don't ask me why). Or maybe a install of windows over itself where you keep your programs (as a last resort, or well, a fresh install of Windows is a last last resort)....

Also, an update of your ethernet drivers might be worth a try....IOW, just try any and everything that may yield a result, as long as it's not going to otherwise mess up your system, so all my suggestions are fairly benign.

@KeyplayerG - I feel your pain . . no, I really, really do.

Here are my setups for the PreSonus FADERPORT 8, which I can control all my Audio needs as the Video plays out:

BIG TIP #1: From the Get-Go I have setup/selected the as the "emulator". My success has been NOT having Vegas loaded whilst I set the hardware. I do this by holding down TWO SELECT Button on the FP8 and THEN turn on the FP8. This gives me an opportunity to go with MCU (Logic). Press the restart button option and get busy with firing up VP16

BIG TIP #2: I have NOT delved into assigning of ANY of the options in the last example, just allowed the internal pixies to sort it out - let sleepy dogs snore . . . .

Does that help?
