Convert 4/3 DVD to Wide Screen

My family room TV is showing its age and I'm getting ready to replace it, so thinking its time to go the HDTV route. Thinking about one of the newer Panasonic 50 inch Plasma units that have 3000 to 1 contrast ratio.

Now my questions.

Anyone have this model or some opinions on others?

I have a made a bunch of DVD's with Vegas with the NTSC 720x480 template with field order set as lower field first.

The broader question is since these are comparatively lower resolution what's the benefit of re-rendering or is there?

Am I correct in assuming that since the HDTV models I'm considering all have progressive scan and will be getting a new progressive scan DVD player, that I should switch to those preferences if I re-encode in Vegas and how about some discussion on the various templates, advantages over the lower verses higher HD 30p compared to HD 1080i etc..

My wife and I got a bigscreen a few months back; I was very lucky in the fact that she saw one from across the showroom floor - the brightest one there - and said "THAT'S the one I want!"

Well. When those opportunities arise, ya just got to jump at it :)

We opted for a DLP system, not a plasma. I think it's more of a sweet spot in terms of price and what you get. We got the RCA Scenium 61". I absolutely love it, though I couldn't spout specs. Tons of connectivity, HDTV tuner and ethernet built in. I think it and Samsung are close competitors. Good luck, have fun!
