Convert DVD movie to AVI to edit inVegas

I have a DVD that can only be played on my computer. I want to convert the DVD into an AVI that I can edit in vegas? If I could play the DVD on my set top player I could simply firewire conect to my camcorder and computer to capture. At least I think so.

Why can you only play this DVD on your computer? If it's not a regular DVD-Video, then we'd have to know what it is to tell you how to convert it.
