Convert stereo track to 2 separate mono tracks?

Hi,

I want to convert 1 stereo track to 2 separate mono tracks so that I can apply separate panning, FX, etc. I have a Canon 60D and I just did a video with 2 people each using their own microphone. One was recorded on the left channel of the clip, the other on the right. I would like to be able to mix these as 2 separate audio tracks because one of the speakers voices came out much louder than the other's and I would like the pan to be more central rather than the extreme hard right and left I have now.

I know I can hit the mono button in the master fader and kind of tweak things to sound better but it would be nice to have 2 separate in sync mono tracks. I also want to preserve the stereo field for music in the background. I tried adding a bus and tried to turn that bus to mono while leaving the main bus stereo but coudn't get that to work.

FYI - I use Sonar/Cakewalk for music production and splitting a stereo track to dual mono is a routine procedure. Can Vegas do the same?

Thanx, Frederick

Easy...

Go to 'Preferences'-> 'Options' -> 'General tab' and check the box marked 'Import stereo as dual mono..'

Or .. duplicate audio track, right click on one of the tracks and set 'Channels' to right and do the same on the other and set 'Channels' to left...

Thanx Tom,

I'll give it a try. I figured it had to be in there somewhere but I couldn't find it in the on-line manual.

There's also a number of free scripts that split stereo to mono. ;-)

Such as this one (courtesy of Edward Troxel).

It works but you need to switch it back to normal to import stereo tracks as one track and save screen real estate. Very happy the option exists.

That's why the script is easier. :-)

That's why we can minimize tracks that we're not working on, or group those that we're not needing to look at just yet.
