Steelhed wrote on 1/20/2005, 4:10 PM
I am a newb, therfore I am... Actually, it's my video guy having the trouble... He bought Vegas 4 a while back and has never used it.. Now I am doing some music to some video footage and he get's these lines, or linear ridges that are very obvious after saving as an AVI... Anyone got any ideas? I know he can't be the only one getting this with Vegas 4.0.... Thanks in advance... Sincerely Steelhed..

Sounds like interlacing. DV25 is interlaced, of course, because it's meant for a TV. Your computer screen isn't interlaced, though, so yousee it as if it were an artifact.

Output it to a tv or studio monitor and the lines should go away.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.. BTW, the mortar video did not have the lines before we ran it through Vegas.... Thanks in advance...

Since its .avi format, and off the web, has to be some highlly compresed footage - mabye divix?

Thinking your best be would just be to post a link to .avi file is located..
unless of course.. you got it from a file sharing app...

There's all sorts of AVI files encoded all sorts of ways. Just like quicktime. For instance, select a range of video in the timeline and then go to the file menu and select "render as". Choose AVI as the type of render and then click "Custom...". From there go to the Video tab and then select the video format drop-down box. See all the AVI formats? This is just a small sampling of the possibilities for AVI files.

Now cancel out of all this because you don't really want to render anything. Instead, go to the media pool and just select the media file you pulled down from the web. At the bottom of the media pool pane you should see some info about the file. You could also get that info if you right-click on the file and get it's properties.

If you look at this file info I'll bet it's not at like the project template you're using. Probably the file says its field order is "None". The template for your vegas project, however, is probably set to "lower field first" if it's an NTSC or PAL DV project.

It's time to go back to the books and do a bit of reading about project templates, interlacing, file formats, etc. Just do a little reviewing.

'Course there's always a chance that interlacing isn't what you're seeing but I doubt it.

Yes Rmack, I think it's definitely an interlacing issue, I suspected that a little... Yes I'm gonna have to experiment, and maybe even convert it before I use it in Vegas... You guys, Thanks for the replies, and input, at least it has sent me in the right direction... Thanks again... This is the first time using this forum, and I'm not disappointed by the community here, that's for sure...!!!!

S-
What you are seeing in the preview window is a conversion of your file to whatever project template you are using. Vegas is doing it on the fly. If you want a little better performance you could render that media to a new track as something more like whatever your project themplate is.

Is your final output for playback on a TV or is it destined for the web? Maybe the DV template isn't what you want to conform your project too? Just guessing, you haven't said.

OK, So, we made a short DVD with the same footage, and the lines are gone, it looks perfect.... However, What if we want to distribute an AVI via the net? I'm gonna start adjusting things and see what happens.... I'm gonna have to read his Vegas Manual, Wait a second! That's his freakin job! Correction, My video guy is gonna read the manual..LoL Thanks alot guys....

Yes, he'll have to read the manual. There's nothing wrong with Vegas in this respect except that it's a little too flexible.

Tell him we all said your problem is that you've got a nut loose behind the wheel. Clock his response time on that.
