Converting videos

I am a newbie to editing and know even less about codecs and converting files.

Does Vegas Movie Studio Platinum have a conversion tool that will allow me to convert downloaded clips into formats that I can splice together and make my own home movies with? I would like to convert some of the downloaded files so they could be edited for home use and family viewing.

A for instance would be downloading content on a golfer friend that was broadcast on both TV and the Internet and "Mixing/Editing" both to make a longer version added to home videos for home movies shown at family get togethers.

Thanks in advance

We need to know what format(s) those downloaded clips are before we can answer your question.

Have you tried putting the files on the timeline to see if Vegas can read them?

The short answer is that if MS can read the files you can use it to splice them together. If not, you need another converter, of which there are many free examples. One that is very versatile is Freemake.

I'd be curious to know what format and codec you're downloading your video as. (You could find this out by opening a file in the free download Media Info.)

Although Movie Studio does a great job interpreting almost any format, some formats are more easily digested than others. (Divx and Xvid, for instance, are tough formats to edit.)

And not to presume, but if they're torrent downloads, this is the wrong place to ask. See the forum rules.
