Looks like a vertical circle to me. Make sure that 'simulate device aspect ratio' is on. If this is off your preview may be stretched out enough horizontally to make the oval look like a circle. Then again, i am using Vegas Pro so you may have encountered a bug in the Studio version.

'Twould be really really nice if there was an 'aspect ratio' slider in the cookie cutter so we could choose just how oval we wanted it to be. Set it to 1 and you'd get a circle. Set it to 2 and you'd have an oval twice as tall as wide, and set it to 0.333 and you'd get one 3 times as wide as tall. Or, alternatively, have separate height and width sliders instead of just a size slider. Hmmmmm. Seems like a decent product suggestion.

Since newer versions of Vegas Studio have masking, you could create a still image with an oval of any size or shape you want, white on the inside and black on the outside. Save this the same size as the video frame. Add it to the timeline on a track above the upper image (yes, this means you need another track) and change the compositing mode to multiply/mask. Add the Mask effect to the still image. Wherever this mask is white you'll see the track directly beneath. Wherever it's black you'll see the tracks underneath that.

This way you can make masks of any arbitrary shape you wish. You can even make moving masks this way!

Damn, right again Kelly! :) I have used that stupid oval for years, but it stopped working for me about a year ago. I figured it was just me being blonde again, but now I realize it was when I went from SD to HD, and the PAR went to 1.333. I can't tell you how crazy that has helped make me :O Thanks again for your help and explanation, and I hope Sony will take your advice, but don't hold your breath ;) Cin
