Cookie Cutter With Pan/Crop

jaegersing wrote on 2/25/2004, 12:40 AM
I used Event Pan/Crop to do a moving PIP with a video clip, then tried to use the Cookie Cutter as an Event Fx to put a feathered edge on the same clip. What I got was the clip at a reduced size, which is what I wanted, but the Cookie Cutter feathered edge was applied at the full frame dimensions and didn't really touch the clip edges at all (because the clip size was much smaller than full frame).

I know I can get this working by using Track Motion instead of Pan/Crop, but I am still wondering why the Cookie Cutter is not being applied to the resized clip. I thought that since they were both applied to the event then it should work OK. Any ideas?

I can't reproduce your problem. I get feathered edges to the PIP whether I use pan/crop or track motion to create it. However, track motion is the preferred method, because it works on the track level.
Would you clarify your use of the words clip vs event?

You have just hit on the difference between Pan/Crop and Track Motion. When you use Pan/Crop the event size is still full frame, you have just decided to crop the viewing area but any FX you apply will still see the full frame and be applied to the full frame. Track Motion actually changes the event's frame size so that any FX you apply will be contained within the smaller frame size. So applying a cookie cutter to track motion will only effect the smaller window like you want. I think you need to use Track Motion for the effect you want.

To the left of the "cookie cutter" name on the keyframe timeline is a small triangle. This toggles the Pre/Post resize flag for the effect. So, you can have the effect applied PRE resizing (what you want) or POST resizing (the default)

Wow, that's great, thanks a lot for the tip! I will give it a try.

This is probably the wrong thread for this, but why doesn't Vegas supply the Track Motion capability at the Event or Media level?

In fact, why should Track Motion and Pan/Crop be separate effects at all? I should have one window, at the Track, Event or Media level in which I can size, zoom, crop, rotate, pan, deform and position the track, event or media.

And they should have the 3D motion that we now have to add in as a separate plugin.

If this has already been discussed in another thread, then you can just point me there.

Ed, I never even noticed that triangle before. That's excellent. Thanks,

I'm never going to learn how to use Vegas...anything else, Ed?

I'm sure there's lots of stuff in there *I* haven't seen! This is just one of those "hidden jewels" that, once found, you'll use continuously! It's also used in Tsunami to add the borders for the Video Wall and PIP (added to the scripting API at my request - he didn't know the flag existed either until I pointed it out!)
