Copy composite into master project

I have created a composite of 5 tracks that I would like to use in various new projects. This composite is created with filler material and uses nested tracks and track motion to manipulate the material. I would like to be able to insert this composite into multiple places in a master project with each instance having its own specific material. So far I can't even insert a single instance. Here's what I've tried:

1. I brought up two instances of Vegas, one with the composite and one with my master project. I copied the five composite tracks and pasted them into the master project. This created the 5 tracks in the master project but did not preserve the nesting or track motion key frames.

2. I tried bringing in the composite as a nested VEG but this causes Vegas (version 6D) to lock up. Even if this worked, I would have to create a copy of my composite veg for each new instance since each instance uses unique material (i.e., new takes).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: I found an old post that suggested this lockup can happen if the nested VEG is having problems finding its media. I replaced my fillers with generated media and now the composite VEG nests properly in the master.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ultimately what I am trying to achieve is a way to create a few nice composites I can use over and over with material specific to each instance of use. I want to reuse the track keyframing and composite settings. So far, the only way I can see to do this is to create a new copy of my composite, add my material as new takes, render to avi, and add this avi to my master project. Anyone know a better way?

Thanks,

Jerry

Personally i don't see any problem with making copies of the .veg file. It's very fast and easy. .Veg files are tiny so they don't take up much space compared to media files.

Nesting should work, and is the easy and obvious method for this task. We need to figure out why it's not working for you. Do the composite .veg files all open individually in Vegas?

Thanks Kelly. I put an edit in my original post that I found an old thread describing a similar lockup problem being caused by the nested veg not finding its media. I changed all my media in the composite veg to generated media and it eliminated the lockup.

For now I am using the nested veg approach and it will meet my immediate needs. However, in the spirit of effective reuse it would be great if there was a way to nest multiple instances of a "controller" veg for which you could then specify different media for each instance. In the software programming world this is known as "separation of concerns". Then when you wanted to change the control settings across all instances, you would only have to change them in the one controller veg from which all the nested vegs were derived. This would be a boon for the type of production work I am creating.
