Copy Problems VHS to Camcorder

I'm copying old VHS tapes using my Sony Digital 8 DCR-TRV730 NTSC camera. Then fed via firewire to Sony Movie Maker running on my tower and also same problem appears when feeding to my laptop. Files are in AVI format when captured by Movie Maker or other capture/translation software. When I play the clip(s) in Movie Maker I get thin vertical lines appearing on both sides of frames and sometime smaller horizontal lines on bottom of frames. I can mask them with GIF frame overlay. Would like to avoid that technique. Would appreciate comments on how to cure this problem. None of these lines appear on TV watching the recording process nor on playback when viewed in the camcorder.
Please, e-mail direct if you have solution. thanks.

You don't see it on the TV or the camcorder because those lines are hidden behind the edges of the screen. They're actually there, they're just not visible. This will also be true after you've captured / edited / rendered the video. Play it back on a TV or the camcorder and you won't see the lines then either. All VHS (and most analog) video has "goobers" around the edge of the frame. That's part of the reason that TVs don't show you the whole frame. The only reason you are becoming aware of it now is because Movie Maker shows you the entire frame instead of hiding the edges. If you're planning on showing the finished video on a TV then the lines won't be seen.

If you want to show the finished video back on a computer screen then you can continue masking the way you have been. You could also use the Pan/Crop tool as well, but this could distort the image by stretching it out and would slow down rendering even more than the mask does.
