Core Duo requires new motherboards?

Interesting article for anyone looking to upgrade. It explains the new requirments of the new Intel chips. It looks like they need a lot of upgrades.

The last few weeks have been an amazing time in the computer business. Conroe, or Core 2 Duo to use the formal name, has captured all our attention with a combination of stock performance, overclocking capabilities, and value that is nothing short of breathtaking. Once the excitement settled down a bit, however, we realized that all the "Intel" rules had changed with the launch of Conroe.

In the grand scheme of things mobos are hardly an expensive item. I don't see this as such a great issue therefore. What does bug me is the latest mobos seem to bundle a lot of useless stuff at the expense of usefull stuff.
For example one of my older mobos came with 3x 1394 ports and 4 USB ports on board. No graphics.
Now we're lucky to get one 1394 port and lots of USB but we're forced to pay for horrid audio and graphics bits that we'll never use. I wouldn't care so much but there seems to be less expansion slots as well to fit the capabilities we do need.

Well the article talks about even if your motherboard has the same cpu socket as the core duo chips, that doesn't mean it will work with core duo. Same thing for power supplies. They are going to do a followup article on that. There seems to be a lot gotchas like that with these chips. They also say the performance is amazing and these renders Intel "Netburst" chips obsolete.
