Correcting and editing S-VHS footage from a Panasonic AG450 in pro 19

I have hours of footage I need to enhance/correct and edit in Vegas Pro 19. It's S VHS footage from the 90's shot on a Panasonic AG 450 What kind of settings should I use for the project in Vegas. And which tools would be most helpful in making the footage look as good as possible, like it was shot on more modern equipment. The goal is to edit the footage into clips for Youtube shorts, Instagram and Tik Tok. I'd like the footage to not look like an ancient blast from the past. I know there are many tutorials on color correction...etc. I always do what looks best to my eye, however I wonder if there are any standard practices when trying to enhance older video footage to make it look crisper and better. Which tools would be best? Perhaps there are some amazing AI tools. Does using the subscription plan for Vegas 21 give you any of these new AI tools....??????

I also need to clean up the audio. I have Magix Samplitude Pro as well, but am not that proficient in using noise gates or even the denoiser in samplitude.

On a side note do any of you use Waves plugins or something like Supertone's Clear software (used to be Goyo)

I just tried to download the demo and the link didn't work?

What do you use for cleaning up the audio?

Thanks any input will be greatly appreciated!

I like 'some' of the Waves plug-ins, but using them on more than one PC is a f'--ng nightmare, so I stay away from Waves altogether, I tested the Goyo demo (when it was release .. and functional) and posted the results. I do not recall if the topic was on the Vegas Audio or Sound Forge forums. The Goyo demo worked decently compared to much more expensive options. For restoration I normally use the noise reduction tools in Sound Forge Pro (NR-2.0 pack and iZ's RX Elements), If needed, I turn to Steinberg's SpectaLayers Pro, which is included with the Sound Forge Pro Suite.

One question, two answers.

  1. If you will not upscale your output from native NTSC (480i) or PAL (576i), match your project to the source resolution, but you must still deinterlace it for delivery. Set Field Order to Progressive, with Deinterlacing method set to Smart Adaptive.
  2. If you will be using Vegas Upscale to produce HD resolution, set the project resolution to match the output dimensions, and apply the Upscale plugin to the Project Media fx, or to the Event fx, before the Event Pan/Crop.
  3. That is the correct way. We remain hopeful that Vegas will fully automate this process at some point, as well as address the disparity between legacy output and "smart-enabled" project settings.

As far as "enhancing" your video, the upscale plugin in newer Vegas has some AI smooth and sharpen capabilities, and there are various denoising plugins available, including NeatVideo.

I suggest you get Topaz Video AI to upscale and enhance the footage and if you have access to Adobe After Effects try FilmConvert Nitrate to color grade the video.

I was able to enhance this niteclub footage for my friend that I shot back in 1988 that was filmed with a camera similar to the 450. The footage was very noisy and dark but I was able to enhance it a bit.

It has 90K views so far this year so it seems that people like what they saw.

I did this enhancement over a year ago and the AI software has improved much since that time, I likely could do a better job enhancing it today.

The best audio clean up program I have found so far is dxRevive... Magix should license it for Vegas

Accentize dxRevive - AI Speech Restoration Audio Plugin

Edit: I forgot, I did create a updated version not too long ago which is a sharper than the YouTube version from a year ago. Youtube also tends to re-encode things and degrade the quaily
