Corrupted veg file: Any way back?

vegasnewbie wrote on 6/7/2004, 4:58 PM
My project's veg file has been corrupted. The error message says:

"An error occurred during the current operation. An Exception has occurred."

Now if you press the "OK" button, Vegas 5 closes down. I have pasted in below the detailed error message in case this is useful.

My concern is that the veg file is totally lost and dozens of hours of work would have been lost if I had not made back up files about every half hour during my editing. So although I have only lost half an hour's editing work, as a matter of interest, how do you recover from such a crash? This problem reinforces just how essential it is to make back up files that can be used in the event of the corruption of the veg file.

Thanks for your help, Fred

I am using a Pentium IV 3200 meg, with 2 x 200 gig hard drives and Windows XP Home.

The detailed error message reads:

Look for a .veg.bak file and pray!

Vegas itself can make backups for you automatically. (I think it is the default setting to do so.) Any time I've had a crash there was a backup waiting, and I only lost a few minutes of edits.

vegasnewbie,

Did your project contain any still images (JPEG, BMP, etc.)? That crash dump address is the same as other users have reported. Search the Vegas forum for 0x4E38D7 and you'll find other threads on this topic.

We still have not been able to repro this problem here. However, a few tweaks were made to the stills plug-in which have worked for some users. Please contact Customer Support and they can provide you with the update.

Thanks very much for your reply. Yes, as soon as a JPEG still image is added to the timeline, the veg file AND the back up veg file are both corrupted. I tried creating a project which contained just one still image and no movie at all, and this also corrupted the veg file. I will contact Customer Support about this matter as suggested.

Thanks for your help, this is a very serious problem, but I was lucky in that I frequently use the "save as" command to save veg files to a DVD as the project progresses. I have lost very little editing time on this occasion, but without the back up files, I would have lost dozens of hours of work!

As an experiment, I decided to try uninstalling Adobe Photoshop 7, which was the default program on my computer for reading jpeg still photos. After this was done, the default program for jpeg stills became the "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer".

SUCCESS! Suddenly, the previously corrupted veg files sprang into life again, complete with the jpeg still images! I added further still images to my project, and without Photoshop 7 on the computer, the veg file was no longer corrupted. Hope this experiment helps to resolve the problem. I wonder whether Photoshop 7 really is the culprit here?

As a further thought on this matter, I found that my computer did not have Microsoft Direct X 9.0 installed on it. I installed this together with Direct X 9.0b End-User Runtime. I then reinstalled Photoshop 7 and made Photoshop the default program for opening jpeg images.

So far, Vegas 5 has operated properly without any corruption of the veg file that I experienced previously. This would indicate that a reinstallation of Direct X together with Direct X 9.0b End-User Runtime might solve the problem for some people. Vegas 5 now works properly on my computer with Photoshop 7 installed and operating as the default program for opening images. I hope this further experiment is of some help.

Regards, Fred

Download and try out Vegas 5.0b, we put in some changes that should address the problem. Please let us know how it goes.

After I installed Microsoft Direct X 9.0 and Direct X 9.0b End-User Runtime, the Vegas 5.0a veg files with still pics referred to in them did load into the computer properly with version 5.0a.

I have now installed Vegas 5.0b and to date I have not experienced any problems with veg files that include references to still pics, but will let you know if the problem recurs. Thanks very much for your help with this problem.
