i've been following the following two threads closely, but a little confusedly:

Enable Multicore preview playback?!?! - who knew? here

Some interesting memory observations and avchd... here

the various tweaks look very useful, but i would really appreciate an explanation how to accomplish them in a plain, straightforward manner - and any 'downsides' they might have.

and whether they'll make any difference on a core2duo as opposed to a quad?

old fogy,

No downsides noticed at all.... so far.

I have been using multi core preview since version7a. It helps in some respects and not in others, but there is no harm in doing it.

Hold the shift key down while clicking on PREFERENCES and you will see an extra "internal" tab come up. Scroll down the list until you get to "enable multi core playback". double click on the "FALSE" and change it to "TRUE". Hit apply, then exit.

To enable the "greater than 2 gig" flag (so far there has been nothing but posative response on this)

Download and install CFF explorer noted in the thread.
open the program
goto file\open
then find the file... in this case it would be Vegas80.exe
On the left side you'll see "NT HEADER".... "DOS HEADER"... etc
Highlight "FILE HEADER" under "NT HEADER"
On the right side you'll see a chart and in the bottom right corner you will see "CLICK HERE"
Click on that and a check box menu system will open.
Scroll down the menu list until you see "app can handle > than 2gig address space" and check that.
Save the file and close.

It sounds complicated but I assure you it's not. This has little to do with cores so it shouldn't make a difference how many cores you're using.

"enable multi-core rendering for playback". Slower playing back NEO HD clips.
