CPU question

I am rendering a project that mostly uses MTS 1920x1080p60 files and stills to BD MPEG-2 24p. I noticed that the CPU is not being fully utilized. I have an i7-980 and the CPU is only being used at most 30% and VP-11 is not hyper-threading (only 6 threads are being used up to 30%). I have a GTX-570 GPU with it enabled in preferences.

The project is 70 minutes long with color corrections throughout and takes 5 hours to render. I wouldn’t think much about it taking that long if the CPU was being maxed out but it is not even breaking a sweat.

Is this normal? Any idea as to why VP 11 is not hyper-threading? Is there a way to enable Vegas to use more of the capabilities of my system to improve the speed of rendering?

Thanks

Are you running the 64bit install of Vegas? What plugin are you using for color correction? If you are using, for example, an older version of the Neatvideo plugin (just as an example) it may or may not use all of the threads on your i7. I have had the same problem with certain 32bit plugins.

I'm running a P9X79 Deluxe (ASUS) motherboard, with a GTX570 (also have a Galaxy 670 but it hasn't received support from Sony V12... yet, they're incredibly slow), 64gb ram, and the brand new Core i7-3930K six core processor. Vegas barely makes use of all these features.

Yes, I'm using the 64bit install. I have not instaled any plugins other than what comes with Vegas, so I'm not sure what versions they are.

I unistalled the newblue titler.

I breifly had the 32 bit VP-11 because I had read that it didn't crash as much, but still had crashes and so I unistalled it, because of the limit in memory usage.

I am using 32bit color space vs 8 bit in my project.

KelvinWorks:
You have a number of things going concurrently which are going to get the better of you.
1) Do NOT engage 32 bit mode in Vegas for a complete timeline render - you should be at 8 bit. 32bit mode is for other things.....we won't go there now.

2) Search the VegasPro forum for last six months with the following exact search term without the quotes included - but NOTE the spacing as "rendering - threads" . You will be exposed to a lot of comment about this in VegasPro 11 - it won't be easy to digest but it can help you appreciate where you are headed.

"I have a GTX-570 GPU with it enabled in preferences"

If you are processing with the GPU then naturally the CPU won't get heavily used. What happens if you disable GPU?

Wow! Just changed a couple of settings and instead of taking five and half hours to render, it only took one hour and 20 minutes.

I changed project properties from 32 bit video color to 8 bit and then changed in preference the default 16 threads to 10 (12 available) and kept GPU enabled. Also eliminated some track FX, in particular broadcast color that was causing a problem with my blacks not being black (may or may not have had much impact).

The CPU jump up to max usage around 92 to 94%. It would only drop down when I had motion graphics that are already at 24p (14%) or in the areas that I had resample disabled (about 40%).

Thanks videoITguy for the tips and where to look.
