CPU working hard when nothing is happening

I'm using VP18 build 527 and I'm often not able to edit for long durations because VP is doing something in the background that is using ~30% of my CPU, leaving not enough CPU power to play the footage off the timeline smoothly. any idea what is going on here? In the past I've suspected it's building thumbnails for the full project when this happens. At times CPU use will swing back and forth between 5-40% for up to 30 minutes, making me unable to edit during that time. I'm working with a 5 camera multi-track project that is about 1.5hrs long with 4K footage, half Prores LT from Atomos recorders and half XAVC-L from the Sony FX6 and A7sii. I've set the timeline to only show first frame thumbnails to minimize thumbnail building time. Only 31% of my 64GB ram is being used and I'm editing off of an internal NVME solid state drive.

@tim-neighbors Have you tried using proxies, to see if the problem goes away? If it does then it’s probably not a thumbnail issue.
