Craftech....new system need help.

Alright...just went out and spent $600 for a new MSI 845 board, 2.4 processor, and 512MB of 400DDR RAM. Formated main drive and put WIN98SE(yes that...can't afford any better yet) back on clean drive. Had hours of problems with crashes and yes..it shut off again! Guess what...removed my ATI Radeon card(like you already suggested) and it stopped shutting off. All I had to put in it was a creative labs 3D Blaster PCI....it seems fine it rendered my troubled video with out problems.
My question...I am using NERO 6 for DVD authoring and it seems to crash. I am wondering if there are surefire settings I can use in the BIOS and OS to run top-notch? Thanks for your help!

what about the power supply?
craftech wrote on 9/5/2003, 7:55 AM
OK,
What is your entire configuration? Which MSI motherboard? I need more information.
I had also mentioned the power supply in your other post. Can you see the brand and model number for that without removing it? Don't go by the power rating. That rating is misleading.
ATI cards have a history of finnicky drivers and will often require specific bios settings in order to function properly.
Nero has a problem with co-existence although Nero 6 is supposed to be less prone to that. I use DVDA for authoring and burning. Before that I used Ulead DVD Movie Factory(cheap and reliable).

PS: If I don't respond right away give me until tonight. Today I will be in my garage all day tearing apart my transmission for a repair.

Hey John..thanks for responding. I have been fighting this new system and still have problems. Here's what I have:
Microstar 6728 NEO2-LS
800 bus
Intel 865PE
ICH5(?)
DDR400 512mb
2.4 P4
WD 20gig main Drive
Sony DVD Burner

Maxtor Promise 133/ATA card(off board)
SUPPLYING:
Maxtor 80 gig 133/7200
Maxtor 120 gig 133/7200

Onboard Audio
Onboard LAN

Like I said, Clean boot WIN98SE
Vegas 3.0c

I got the new driver for the new Nero and seemed to fix that problem as of now.

The problem at present is that the computer locks up when opening an application(like aol) or even using the board's software system Information program. When I go to system(control panel) I see the yellow(!) by a devise called "SCI IRQ used by ACPI Bus". This is also a setting in BIOS that in disabled. When I enable it, I get even quicker crashes with the "Blue screen of death" page fault. I have tried Default and high performance settings in BIOS....I took out my IEEE and modem. It still freezes. I hope it's not a bad board. Also...the system monitor says that CPU temp is only 120-140 degrees...I am checking tonight for upgrades to BIOS and Bus drivers.
Any help would be appreciated.
If you want..you can EMAIL me at Bruthish@aol.com...so we won't tie up the forum. Thanks Again!

EDIT: Power supply. I had to use another power supply out of another computer case(a new one less than a year old) but I don't what kind or size. The reason I had to use it was my old one didn't have the CPU power cable. I did have to add a Y power cable to power all my devices..(see above)

Some of the bios and driver updates are quite recent:
Bios:
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=433
Drivers:
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/driver/dvr/spt_dvr_detail.php?UID=433
Have you used "Live Update 3" to update the above?:
http://www.msi.com.tw/html/support/liveupdate/main.htm

Compatibility references and system requirements are here:
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=433

Remove the battery or clear the CMOS afterwards and use the default settings to begin with except that I would Disable Power Management in the Bios.
I would then reformat the HDD and install Windows without ACPI support. That should free up the conflicting IRQ (IRQ 9). It should also eliminate many other potential problems.

What else was on IRQ 9?
Which Video Card are you using?

John, I found the problem....which presents another problem. I consider myself a "pro-amatuer" when it comes to computers but I am not real tight on the new stuff. When I bought the Motherboard, Processor, and Memory at CompUSA the tech guy said it all would work. I took his word for it, why wouldn't I? Anyways, after researching I realized that I have a 533mhz FSB processor...which according to MSI's site, won't work with DDR400...bingo...I have to get DDR33 or DDR266. Ok...the memory I bought had a rebate that needed to be sent off quickly to meet the deadline. My wife sent it off. The UPC code went with it. Now CompUSA says they wont take it back because I don;t have the UPC code. I am really pissed because they are the ones that told me it would work. So I am going back there in person and getting an exchange(hopefully). I will let you know if that solves ny problem or not..but I am 90% sure it will.
Thanks!

I don't know if you bought PNY or Kingston, or whatever; but the company will exchange it for you either through the mail or in person. I think PNY is in New Jersey if you live near there.
By the way, CompUsa has a nickname on the internet which I have seen on the bargain forums..........."CrapUsa".
