Crash at Launch! Need answers!

Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 10 Platinum Edition

Whenever I attempt to launch Movie Studio, I get a blue screen of death, and it mentions something is wrong with "stdriver.sys". That file is in my System 32 folder. If I change the extension to "stdriver.sys" to ".BAK", the program runs just fine, though my computer cannot detect my sound card, therefore I can't hear anything at all! If I change the extension back to ".sys", my sound card is detected, but I get the blue screen again!

What I have done:

1. I tried making a copy of "stdriver.sys" (dropping it in another folder), and changed that one's extension to ".BAK". Then I dropped it back into System 32, but it didn't work.
- I also tried this the other way around. No dice.

2. I tried updating all of my drivers, and they're all up to date. I still can't hear anything if the file is called "stdriver.BAK".

3. Changed my WIA to automatic, manual and even disabled it; again, to no avail.

Here are some specs:

Manufacturer: eMachines
Model: ET1331G
Processor: AMD Athlon II X2 235e Processor 2.70 GHz
RAM: 6GB
OS: Windows 7 (64bit)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Think outside of Sony Vegas Movie Studio and do Google searches regarding your soundcard (and/or computer model) and see what comes up. It may have nothing to do with Vegas, really, even though you experience the issues while trying to use Vegas.

Had VMS worked before the .sys file went kaput?

Good troubleshooting so far, though. It sounds like you know computers fairly well to think of those things, so think beyond VMS and see what you find.

So far, Google searches have yielded nothing to help, but to answer your question, this is a brand new copy of Movie Studio. I bought it, popped in the installation disc, followed all the instructions for all the applications, and then attempted to launch the program, which in turn gave me a blue screen.

I'll keep searching, though.

Try re-seating the sound card. Perhaps it got loose/bumped?
