Crash - crash - crash

Is anybody else getting frustrated over Pro 11 with constant crashes? When I purchased Pro 8 it never never crashed. When upgraded to Pro 10 it would crash once in a while. Pro 11 crashes at least once a day. I put in the new upgrade and still it crashes. I work with big files. I do dance recitals which takes a lot transitions and editing. The other day I had 14 crashes. The next day only 5. Today is early and I have already had 3 crashes. I have a Intel(R) Core (TM)2 Quad CPU Q6700 @ 2.66GHz 2.67 GHz. Any suggestions beside switching editing programs, which I have very seriously considered.

Are you on the latest revision?

Different things trigger different crashes. What are you doing when Vegas crashes?

Don Schmidt says, "I work with big files."

How big are the files? What type?

If I work on a big project I will divide it into a number of smaller projects and then create a final project with the small ones nested in it.

Takes a lot less computer power and resources while editing and if a crash or something else happens it only takes down a small portion instead of the whole thing!

Vegas 10 and 11 takes a lot more system resources than Vegas 8 so your system might need some upgrading to handle it.

You might also need to update drivers as well.

You do not list all of your system specs including the version of Windows you are using.

Without knowing complete system specs we can only speculate what your problems are. You can see your system, we cannot see it. That makes a huge difference as to how affective we can be in helping you.

As a simple reply, I am having plenty of crashes that I have documented in another thread. These are very specific for me, however, and always occur around rendering operations.

I don't have an answer yet, myself, though......and have to investigate my entire setup further, even though I am sure my basic computer hardware should be up to the task.

Have you tried running Vegas in compatibility mode? That seems to help a lot of users.

I am having the same issues, and let me tell you, I have a LOT of hardware in my machine. dual Xeon 3.0ghz 6 core CPU's, 32gb RAM, 2 SAS 15K drives in Raid 1. Win 7 64bit, latest patches, and dual NVidia 7500 cards.

I am now, every time I render a video, failing at some random point.

As of build 683, the program does not throw an error, the countdown timer goes to 0, the % complete freezes, and the accrual timer climbs for as long as I let it run. In the previous build it would throw an error and ask me to report it to Sony.

If ANYONE has any ideas, please let me know. We are dead in the water right now as we cannot get any of the videos to render.

File inputs (source videos) are between 1.9 and 2.3gb MPEG-2.

Thanks!

Webservant, thanks for including so much info. The one thing i don't see is your output type.

One option that occurs to me is to do a prerender before your final render. I know that's totally unappealing from a time and disk space perspective, but if it results in a completed render that's much less of a time investment than trying and failing multiple times.

The idea would be to prerender to a simpler codec like sonyYUV that doesn't use long GOP compression.

(Maybe the OP will come back if he wanted more than just a chance to vent.)

Thanks for some of the ideas. I have the new revision. I am using Windows 7 64 bit. The crashes usually happen when I am editing. I have not had any issues when rendering. I am also looking at upgrading my hardware. The files I work on quite often are 2 to 2.5 hours of recitals.

Sorry to hear that you're having difficulty. This may help:

In some cases Vegas will sort itself out in 15 - 20 sec. and begin responding again. Give it some time to respond and you'll begin to see where Vegas can/cannot recover on its own.

Use the ctrl+s shortcut (Save) after nearly every edit so that you don't lose your work when whichever editing program you happen to be using eventually crashes (in my experience they all crash, it's just a matter of how often).

Make sure that you have plenty of memory installed - at least 2GB per core.

Make sure that your Windows install is up to date with the latest patches. I strongly recommend Win7

nVidia graphics cards seem to be more stable than ATI Radeon cards (I tried an ATI card and had to remove it because V11 began crashing ever 60 - 90 seconds)

If you're running nVidia cards, install the latest drivers.

Post your system specs ASAP.

You also want to include info about the camera(s) and file format(s) you're using. Some are more edit-friendly than others... I've had a few specific AVCHD files that ALWAYS cause Vegas to crash. Simply rendering these problem files to another format (.mxf) solved the problem.

As to your original question, annoyed, yes. Frustrated, no. Even with the increase in crashes, Vegas 11's GPU acceleration has vastly improved my overall editing experience compared to Vegas 10.

Thanks Guy I do just about everything you suggest. I have nVidia graphics card. I have 4 GB of memory. I have the latest Windows 7 and all drivers are updated. And I definitely have learn to save save save. I guess I was just so spoiled with Pro 8 and 10 where they hardly ever crashed. But I sure do like New Blue. The cameras I use are Sony FX 1 and work in MPEG-2. Everything I shoot is in HDV so I know that rendering takes longer but I have not had any issues with the rendering except I wish it was faster.

I run a AMD Radeon HD6950, and have zero crashes with V11 - editing, playback or rendering. Maybe AMG is buggier, but I can't complain!
