Crash during Rendering to BD AVC (VP12b770)

set wrote on 5/21/2014, 9:19 PM
Hello, sharing my experience:

During rendering a long project (half-an-hour duration) to BD ready files 'straight on Project', using Mainconcept AVC, I catch crash (send-able report), and the second time, I had a not responding application of Vegas.

GPU use is about 91%. So, I assumed that this process took computer power almost full, and this result 'a bit unstable'. Right now I render the whole project to MXF intermediate format first and from this 'Final', and finally render to BD AVC via Mainconcept. So far so good, and still doing it's job while I write this post. Still have 2 '1.5 hour project' to go. Hope no more issues.

If I remember previously before switching to Mainconcept, I usually use Sony AVC, and I never had this issue. Only it is a bit slower, GPU use is about 50% or less. I haven't experiment again for this one, if I render from 'Project' using SonyAVC, I will update the post later.

If I find SonyAVC rendering for longer duration run smooth, I may have to choose later to when I use Mainconcept AVC and when to use SonyAVC.

to Developers: If you receive report crash with description like 'Crash during rendering' and a similar one, it is from me.

Personal Update for Rendering with Mainconcept vs SonyAVC issues:

Try rendering to BD AVC (same project) using SonyAVC Encoder:
Rendering completed without any issues, although requires a bit longer time. GPU usage around 30 to 50, sometimes 60%. (as monitored via AddGadget GPU Meter).
Duration: 00:34:39
Rendering Time: 1:05:44

Whether Mainconcept or VegasPro 12/13 or my condition of Windows7 installation, something can't keep up with rendering performance and 'collapse over-exhausted' during high-peak work. For shorter projects, Mainconcept can still do its' job well, but for longer project, more than 10 minutes, crash could happened somewhere.
Different situation happened if I rendered all of them first to my choice of intermediate, Sony MXF 35Mbps, then render that single big intermediate file to AVC by using Mainconcept. That's what I did previously in VP12 as I didn't thought about this before!

At least now know when I use MC-AVC or SonyAVC.

Usual places where Vegas 'collapse' for this project:
2 cameras, avchd format, PiP modeled to show them both. Standard FXs: Level-ColorCurve-ColorCorrector.

Robertdupper:
I usually saved them in PNGs, per layer. You may want to use this route if you need alternate temporary route.

set,
I found your crash (thanks for the keyword -- brilliant idea) but unfortunately the crash occurs in the AMD OpenCL DLL on a thread spawned by the AMD driver, so I cannot determine a cause for the crash. I wish I could give you advice for how to avoid crashes like this, but I regret that I do not have any.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the reply, glad to know the keyword idea can help locate the report faster. I will be doing the same in future for similar repeatable issues in the future if possible. Perhaps other users can do similar way for locating the problem.

How about something like this, based on my personal assumption to not full-load the GPU processing to the max (91%) from above tests, but of course I can be mistaken :
Is it possible to have a limit setting on maximum GPU processing support ? Something like speed limit for cars.
Perhaps by custom set the processing limit to 80% for instance, can leave 20% for other processing or task or much slower but safer one.
Still, this is just a trial-n-error.

Which driver are you using for your AMD card? I have the best experience with driver 13.12 for a HD6970. Works flawless in VP12 & 13 even with 4K footage. I can render MC AVC, Sony AVC all with GPU acceleration enabled.

Have you tried AMD's clean uninstall utility https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/39278380/amdcleanuputility.exeand reinstall of the driver? I am just guessing but it could be that you have an old dll left in your system.

Update1:
Uh oh, BSOD! Gonna need some times to do...

Update2:
System restore, then proceed again with standard uninstall first, bsod again, atikmdag.sys mentioned.
System Restore back to present state before having uninstallations.

--- Still decide my next self-diagnosis, from cleaning dust inside CPU box to possibility for whole Win7 reinstallation.

General Computer Question:

Just wondering, is there any trusted Windows cleaner or similar alike that can be recommended to cleaning cache/temp/junk files & optimizing ? (instead of full clean reinstall)
If you need to do this, what steps you will do?

Thanks,

Dear Sirs,
Just joined the group. I have crashing upon OPENING a file I've opened many times, I think in an earlier version, 12. It crashes upon opening every time. So then I tried opening SVP 13, and importing the project. The second I even *touch* the file, SVP 13 crashes instantly. I do not understand this software.

Also, whenever I open a different project and render it, SVP 13 renders about 6 minutes in, then just FREEZES, and doesn't finish the render, no matter what settings I have, CPU only, Cuda, Open GL, max threads, 1 thread!!! This is the ultimate show killer. This is unusable software. Please help me finish my project. It makes no sense.

This looks like a driver error. Make sure GPU acceleration is off everywhere. try resetting Vegas by holding CTRL+SHFIT and then launch it.

Can you tell us which model GPU you have exactly?
