Crashes During Render

VMS has begun to "randomly" crash during renders. When it crashes, it completely "locks up" my computer system requiring me to hit the reset button. It's not related to the content since it does so randomly. I've been simply re-booting and hoping it will complete the render on the next attempt. I'd say that I get these "crashes" on roughly 20% of my attempts. Anyone else having such a problem? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I've no idea what the problem is, but can you give some more information about the rendering - what format are you rendering to, what settings have you used? If you're rendering to avi, what codec have you selected?

I notice you say it's begun to crash - does this mean it used to be ok? A few people have had problems with their processor overheating during renders - it may be worth making sure your fans are running and there's no dust clogging things up, coating heat sinks etc.

Rendering has been to create m2t files using the 60i preset. Sources have included HDV avi's (both 1440x1080 and 1920x1080), SD avi's, as well as still images. There appears to be no consistency linking it to any of these sources.

On the surface, it does appear that it might be an overheating problem, but I've used Speedfan to monitor CPU temp and it remains around 50C at 100% utilization. I've got an older P4 3.06GHz which tends to run hot anyway and have installed a very large cooler.

I've always had these problems since beginning to do the HDV renders. Initially, I was using 6.0a and just recently upgraded to 6.0b. It's not really a showstopper since it works "most" of the time, but it sure is annoying. Just recently had one of my drives in my video Raid 0 array go south and am awaiting replacements.

For grins, think I'll install VMS on another machine and see if the problem persists.

Thanks for the reply.

Just before you make your movie, are you getting rid of all your temp files and garbage by going to programs, accessories, tools, disc cleanup? and then doing a disc defrag? Do you have sufficient space on your harddrive to run the program and the temp files it creates? The only time mine has crashed is when it runs short of space. I corrected this mostly by adding another drive that I put my working files on and keeping my C drive clean.
