Crashes hard importing GoPro Hero Black clips

cspvideo wrote on 2/22/2020, 8:39 AM

Even in the latest build of Vegas 421 it crashes hard when importing more than 14 or 15 clips from a Hero. It may be the 60fps. I just imported 40 clips from a JVC 4k camera as mov files (their default) and it wasn't an issue.

My details:

Windows 10 Pro build 18362
Intel Core i-9-7900x @3.30 ghz
Ram is 32 gb
Hard drives: Lots of them. 3, 1 TB SSD. One for OS and Apps. Others for media. Also DAS Raids with 16 TB of storage (2).

Video Card is NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1080ti 1,048,576 ram

The clips are all 3840 by 2160 @ 60fps. I can import them into version 16 with no problem. I can also run them through Adobe Media Encoder and change them to 30fps and it's ok in 17. I gave up trying to make it work in Vegas and did the project in Adobe Premiere Pro.

No problem here with 4K AVC /HEVC 50p files from my GOPro hero black 7 with and without so4compoundplug.dll on laptop from signature.
BTW I slightly use more than 3 such files of almost 9 minutes length in 1 project, and if I want more or longer I used "nested" vegs.

Thank you @j-v. I tried it with and without so4compoundplug.dll and that made no difference. When it crashes it also corrupts the desktop display.

Try updating your display drivers, if that is the case. Use the Studio drivers.

For the right driverversion you have to make choices on the Nvidia download site, which one did you choose?

Did you already tried what I always do and told you?
When there are more than 3 such heavy files with more than 25 minutes, I make for each of those with no more than 3 files or a total of 30 minutes a veg and joined them later together on one timeline as "nested" vegs. Also easier to work with.

@j-v When you say "heavy" do you mean the length of the individual clips or the total? Are you suggesting I break the 45 clips (that's just one days shooting by the way) into three veg files and nest them? That may work in terms of the software but I've got about 10 shooting days with a variety of cameras and codecs. While I haven't had trouble with importing different codecs (except for GoPro in THIS version of Vegas) I have had trouble at times with rendering those types of files. I will try your work-around although I may not have time to do that immediately. I'm coming up on deadline for this. I guess my appraisal would be that why should a work-around be necessary? Shouldn't it just work? Looking ahead to cameras coming out in 2020, Canon and Nikon are both releasing mirrorless cameras that can shoot in 8k, 4k or 2k. Frame rates are not limited to 30fps. Depending on the resolution the frame rate can be 30, 60 or 120. Keep in mind it works in version 16. In version 17 the clips that are 30fps come in and play nice no matter how many I import. I do thank you for your suggestions.

JN- wrote on 2/23/2020, 11:44 AM

@cspvideo If your using mixed frame rates, from different cameras, in the project, try setting the project properties to the Gopro media.

If possible. Make available a sample clip and we can duplicate it many times and test stability on our systems.

Is the Gopro media variable frame rate? If so try converting to CFR.

You may call it a workaround, but FIRST import a part of the video you want to use into Nr 1 and than another part into Nr 2 a.s.o. and merge them in a total project is a normal way of working with Vegas already for years. But if you think you must do it your way? No problem for me, but come not here complaining about the program and asking for solutions.

@JN- I ran all of the clips through Adobe Media Encoder. Short answer is that works. GoPro and most phones will vary the shutter speed to compensate for light changes. I think that freaks Vegas out. MOV files were not giving me problems in this case since they were all fixed 30 fps files. @j-v Not sure what I typed that insulted you but I am sorry that you felt that I was criticizing you. The solution appears to be to run all the GoPro footage through a software that converts the clips into a uniform frame rate and / or shutter speed. I have Adobe Media Encoder so I used that. The clips now come into the timeline without an issue. If I want this workflow I now have a solution.

@cspvideo Super, alls well that ends well.

I was just recently discussing this in another thread. There's a zip file with several batch files at this link.

Some are CPU only encoding, slow, for outputting to either h264, HEVC or Prores and two are Nvenc encoding, faster, for outputting to either h264 or HEVC

Now there is confusion. All GoPro files are "Frame rate mode                          : Constant", as indicated in mediainfo. Yes, cell phones vary the frame rate in a given clip, but not GoPro. Varying the shutter speed would be true of any video shot in aperture priority mode on any camera. That cannot be the problem

I have the same problem as the OP: importing GoPro Hero8 HEVC clips (UHD 30p) crashes Vegas Pro 17 (latest update ) and previous versions of 17 instantly; sometimes it crashes the whole computer. I am running an i7 8th generation with 16GB RAM and have also Nvidia graphics. I have tried various settings about hardware and software decoding and nothing works. I have no problem editing H264 files, even 10bit ones, and 10bit ProRes 422 HQ files in Vegas.

GoPro is both a professional tool and a mass-market popular camera. It is ludicrous that this happens in Vegas. The same files are easily edited in Resolve and in Edius Pro. This is a Vegas Pro problem.

This was "thrown" on the timeline as is, cut down a little bit, some Color Corrector, Brightness & Contrast, Saturation, then rendered with Default Magix HEVC 4K 29.970 (AMD VCE) template.

Settings on GoPro were: ISO Min: 100, ISO Max: 400, W/B: 5000K, Resolution: 4K, Frame Rate: 30, Shutter: 60, Audio: Off, Color: Flat

Oh, and if you use the "Auto" shutter, it will adjust the ISO and/or the Shutter Speed on your GoPro as needed. So yes, if you do set your GoPro like that, you can end up with a "Variable Frame Rate" like a smartphone, or a capture card recording, or from nVidia ShadowPlay/Radeon Re-Live, etc.

@Chief24 Thanks for that clarification Chief. So depending on how you set up the recording of the gopro it may or may not record in VFR or CFR mode. I have no access to Hero 7/8 media and therefore it was just an assumption on my part that it might be tied to a vfr issue.

I used my phone clips, VFR, to investigate converting to CFR ... link.

Actually for clarity on anyone else following this post I think @cspvideo may have inadvertently marked my .mov to .mp4 post as solution, whereas it should have been my previous post to that one. “Is the Gopro media variable frame rate? If so try converting to CFR. Update: Is fixed now by moderators, thanks.
