Crashes reporting nvopencl64.dll as Fault Module

JamesPlaysGames wrote on 12/23/2023, 2:57 PM

I have seen other topics mention this exact issue, but none of the discussions have lead me to a solution for my own issue.

I've been using Movie Studio Platinum 14 (Note: I am now using Vegas Pro 19 with the same issue) since it was new, without any issue. This past week or so, I started to have issues when rendering videos, where the program would crash and cite nvopencl64.dll as the Fault Module, suggesting a sudden conflict with my NVidia drivers.

Nothing should have been changed with my system during this time, but I attempted to check the driver for corruption, and even forcefully installed the most recent drivers by going to nVidia's site and downloading them. I have also now upgraded to using Vegas Pro 19. The same issue persists, and has even resulted in some crashes when attempting to close the program. It should be noted that when disabling GPU rendering, it SEEMED to resolve the issue at the expense of longer rendering times, but I have not tested this enough to guarantee.

My video card is a bit old - a GeForce GTX 1660 - but everything else appears to be functional in its usage, and I have no other crashes to report that would be connected to it or its drivers. My system is also getting a bit old - Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-9600K CPU @ 3.70GHz   3.70 GHz with 32GB of RAM - but again, there should have been nothing changed with my system to suddenly cause these conflicts. I also use Windows 10 and have no upgraded to 11 yet.

So, in short; Vegas Pro 19 is crashing when rendering or closing, and the fault module is nvopencl64.dll. Tried updating drivers, and it did not help. Unsure what the next step should be for resolving this. If more information is needed, please let me know.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Do either of the projects in my signature work with VP19 and NVENC on your system? They are known good projects with good media.

If you type reliability into windows search bar, run the programme that appears, go to vegas pro and click on it, if it says hardware error then you know that is either a real hardware error (unlikely) or a driver error. You would use DDU to uninstall and reinstall drivers.

Less likely to be a driver problem if there's nothing about a hardware error and you're using known good drivers such as latest studio driver.

So this is concerning...

Do either of the projects in my signature work with VP19 and NVENC on your system? They are known good projects with good media.

The "Pro Fanmade Ad" file is for a newer version of Vegas, and will not open in Pro 19.

The other file, the "BenchmarkProject4K" file, will cause Vegas to hang and stop responding when it attempts to open it.

For some reason, none of the crashes that included nvopencl64.dll are showing in the Reliability History, but I have a couple of other reports that are showing up there. I do not know if these are related or helpful at all;

I started to encounter more errors during the editing process. Vegas was crashing or Not Responding while I was reviewing and editing footage, so I believe these are where these reports came from.

Just to be sure, I re-downloaded and re-installed the latest drivers from NVidia, doing the Clean Install option. This is when the crashing and freezing during editing seemed to begin, but since I've only been using Pro 19 for a couple days now, and the errors are inconsistent, I cannot say for sure that they wouldn't have happened before this.

For now, I have got into Preferences, and unchecked "Use GPU processing for ACES color management" and "Enable OpenCL/GL Interop for Intel GPU" and turned off GPU acceleration of video processing. I will continue to test with these changes and report my findings in the near future.

The 4K benchmark works on just about every system from the last decade with VP16 or higher so that is not a great sign.

I'd follow Todd's advice on a DDU uninstall.

Your Intel driver is old, you can get a new one from Intel directly.

Hi again. I'm sorry to have left this thread hanging for 3 months. Holidays kept me busy for a while, and then I wanted to make sure things were actually stable and seemingly resolved before I updated.

After doing a clean install of new video drivers, and updating my Intel drivers, things to be much better. I have been able to do GPU rendering without any crashes, (fingers crossed), including renders that took between 2-3 hours. So I want to say that was the solution.

I never did get the Benchmark video to work properly though. Vegas always freezes up when I try to open that file.

But thank you for the advice and helping me to troubleshoot and hopefully fix the issue!
