Crazy...Wacky... idea for those of us going to NAB.

Liam_Vegas wrote on 4/4/2004, 10:40 PM
Having attended last years NAB... and being somewhat embarrased when I could not even find the Vegas booth (actually I walked by it several times).... This year... it seems everything will be changing...

From the descriptions and hints from Jay Mitchell's posts we are finally going to have a place at NAB that will be something that we can be proud of. I CANNOT WAIT.

Apart from the special Sony Get-together on the Monday Night I am mostly VERY interested to hear about that 20-seat Vegas 5 / DVDA classroom.

Of course I have the fortunate ability to go and see this stuff for myself... and a lot of people on this forum are not in that position. Some have already suggested that we post some digital stills from the show... but I have a different idea.

Here's a really wacky idea.... perhaps those of us going to the show could use our skills as Vegas Editors and capture one of the 45 minute sessions.... edit it... encode it for the web... and then upload it somewhere... so that EVERYONE can see it for themselves.

After all... it's not as if we would have a problem finding a camera or two and a couple of hundred Vegas users who would be able to do this! I'll even bring along my own cameras if that would help (a PD170 and VX2000).

Crazy idea or what?

Liam,

What a Briliant Idea !!

So, what do you guys out there think? Do you want me to get permission from Sony to make this happen for all of you who can't come?

Great idea Liam - I for one would love to see any such video.

Next best thing to bein' there!

Maybe Sony would contribute to your costs.

Well... that wasn't exactly why I was suggesting we do it.... and I am going to be there <anyway>.

Think of it more like a bit of "paying it forward" to all the members of this community who benefit so many of us.

My thought here was that it could be a TRUE group effort of whoever is there (the many SoCalVegasUsers and others)... actually working on this with Vegas 5 at the show.

I may be stretching it a bit here... to expect to be able to use the new version for this... but it sounds like a great idea to me.

Think of it like those "make a film in 24 hours" types of gigs only we are going to try and do it MUCH quicker than that.

In any case... I believe the food and drinks are on Sony on the Monday night bash... so plenty of time to PARTY!

VegasUsers.com still has *plenty* of hard drive space available on the video sharing drive.

Yes, I too think that's an excellent idea. And if you need any additional web space for the videos, I'll be happy to dontate some along with Kelly.

VegasUsers.com still has *plenty* of hard drive space available on the video sharing drive.

Now we are starting to rock! Let's make this into a coast-to-coast worldwide grass roots movement where the Vegas community pulls together to make something happen here! I am all for it.

A 45 minute or so video will likely turn out to be pretty large (about 70Mb for a 45 minute stream at 250Kbps)... so I am just thinking that maybe a <real> stream of the video will be the best way to handle it (although nothing wrong in having it downloadable from sites too).

I do have my own dedicated Media Server (running Windows Media server of course) sitting in a data center... so I would be able to host the video stream, at least for a while anyway. As long as I didn't have 1000's of simultaneous visitors I could handle it... although Sony <might> like to have the video stream hosted elsewhere (somewhere with more bandwidth available than I have).

I recall that NAB does usually have some kind of live video stream going on. If it is like last year they have a host who does interviews in a very simple "studio" setup (actually the corner of some small booth) and they have a combination of live interviews with exhibitors and some "canned" videos they taped at some of the sessions or from around the hall. So... there may be a few ways for those of you not going to see what is going on.

It would still be useful to hear from more Vegas users out there on whether you are behind this idea (big hint: I think if Sony sees a big enough response here... it may make the task of getting an OK from Sony on this idea much easier).

That would be totally awesome. I'm from Canada and can't go to NAB and being able to see the classroom would really make my day (and week I guess :) ) If you guys need a mirror for storage I can share some space.

You guys rock !!

Amazing. This more than I hoped for.

I have some space and bandwidth available on my personal page also. If you want to break up the different presentations and post some on my site.

If we don't have any large space available with lots of bandwidth we could post the various clips on different sites, then have one site with links to all the other sites. Sort of like an organized link station. Also, it would be great if we could get clips of things like the presentations, the class, the booth, etc.

I would love to help out in any way. Just joined SCVUG. Happy to be on board!

I also have a bit of space, not much - but would be willing to buy more to help host, or contribute a few bucks to help defray costs. Absolutely this is a great idea, and I think most users of this board would agree. PLEASE let me know what I can do.

Awesome idea! For those that cannot be there, this is a great opportunity to get the session out to the masses.

Wooohoooo...... that is great news Jay!

Now all we have to do is deliver!

What a unique opportunity we have here. It strikes me that this is just SO RIGHT from so many different angles... I am spinning.

Please let Sony know how much we appreciate them giving you permission for you to do this. And thank you for all the effort you guys are putting in to bring NAB a little closer to us.

I think you just have (although no doubt Jay will share that comment with Sony direct).

Of course the other way that we can ensure they know how we feel is to attend that special Vegas reception on the Monday Night ( (those of us that'll be there of course).

For those who cannot make it to NAB... make a point of viewing the video we produce and post lots of great comments about what you see!
Liam_Vegas wrote on 4/5/2004, 2:51 PM
So... we have permission from Sony to do this... but now the question I have for you is WHAT (else) do you want us to capture?

I may be running a litle too far with this... but give me an inch and I'll take a mile.. so now I am thinking what else apart from the 45 minute demo should we capture?

ideas so far are.....

Put some faces (and voices) to the names.
Get some group shots of the Vegas folks who are there.

One-on-one interview with a few Sony/Vegas folks?
What questions do YOU want to ask? (not sure if they would agree to this... but you never know).

general location shots showing the Sony area
just to show off what else is happening at the Sony "pavillion". Any other specific ideas?

What else?

Cheno wrote on 4/5/2004, 2:55 PM
You could show the crickets at the FCP section of the Apple booth....
cheroxy wrote on 4/5/2004, 3:05 PM
I would love to see the different presentations that Sony might give, ie - when Sony announces the Vegas upgrade and anything that shows off Vegas/DVDA.

The names with faces was a great idea. Still this is too good to be true.
thanks,
Cheroxy

Great idea! I have ~450 meg of space and ~40 Gig of bandwidth to donate if you need it.

Outstanding! Big thanks from the Aloha state. Would prefer Windows Media Player as the stream format but hey, anyway is better than nothing. Great job all! Can't wait for this!
