create event from a frame grab

gsmith wrote on 8/29/2011, 11:44 PM
Hi All,
I want to use a video frame as background for my credits. For that I essentially want to create an event out of that frame grab. However when I pull the event it stretches the original event and pulls in other frames from original video.

Without pasting the same frame 100s of time, how can I create an event out of that frame ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

You use the snapshot button in the preview, save as PNG, and import that still.
Set your preview to Best/Full before taking the snapshot.

... or you can use a velocity envelope - drag the left edge of the video event to the frame you want, right click - add envelope/velocity and set it to Zero.

Several ways to do this, one of which may be better depending on your workflow.

1) Save as image
Save frame grab to PNG file (click on disk icon in video preview window) and bring image file into project. Extend duration to your heart's content.

2) Velocity Envelope
* Add frame to timeline
* Right click event and select Insert/Remove Envelope > Velocity
* Set velocity envelope to 0%
* Extend duration to your heart's content

I haven't tested, but I imagine that there may be rendering advantages/disadvantages depending on the approach. For example, when used to speed up or slow down footage, the velocity envelope can have a distinct effect on render times. Not sure what sort of effect the velocity envelope has on render times when set to 0%. Something for you to test as you determine the best approach for your situation.

Thanks for your prompt responses. That helped a lot ! Saving as png was easiest and got the work done in a few seconds.

And the easiest..... is ....... Right click on Event and in Poperties uncheck Loopng and then stretch the end of the Event as far ad you want - perfect!

I offered that solution above as it means you don't need an extra piece of media, the PNG, knocking about. The result is ALL contained within the same Event.

And thank you Grazie!

It always seemed dumb to me that if you stretched say the end of a clip to insert a transition, it repeated the start, which can be quite unrelated. Freezing the end makes much more sense. Yippee! Something useful learnt today.

"Right click on Event and in Poperties uncheck Loopng and then stretch the end of the Event as far ad you want - perfect!"Grazie, You ARE THE MAN!. I love it when someone posts a simple time saver that makes me ask the question, "Why haven't I been using that for years?"

btw: If an audio event is grouped with the the video event, you'll probably want to ungroup or unloop on the audio event as well.

Grazie's suggestion is limited to the case where you need the frame from the last frame of your media. As such, it will not be useful in most cases because there are thousands of frames in any piece of media and the odds are good that you will want one of the frames rather than the very last one.

To make Grazie's method work for any frame in any event, you need to first right-click on the event and select "Create Subclip." After doing this, you can then do what Grazie suggested.

He he! ! I'm pleased.

If the Event has been trimmed, you won't have the FULL Event, in these circumstances Right click and make a Subclip first. Job done.

"To make Grazie's method work for any frame in any event, you need to first right-click on the event and select "Create Subclip."Or simply hit the "S" key to split the event? Edit: Doesn't work, see below.

Jerry, that doesn't work because the clip "remembers" that it was longer and will still stretch it out to the last frame.

Hah, just read JM's comment picking me up on mine. Didn't read his till just now. Mike is correct, just Splitting won't do it, you need to make Subbies.

Grazie

Yeah, JohnMeyer's post read, "Grazie's suggestion is limited to the case where you need the frame from the last frame of your " Somehow, I read that as the "last frame of your event". As usual, John's 100% correct.
