Creating a CNN style Ticker Tape

Xavion wrote on 4/27/2005, 6:22 AM
How can you make two or three sentences scroll across the bottom of the screen like you see on CNN and other news programs using
Vegas 5.

Using two push transitions works for four or five words. But, I need
continues text scolling. Thanks in advance for any feed back or info on a trainning DVD that covers this.

Perhaps a Flash animation, if you have Flash.

Maybe a LONG text image (done with Photoshop).

If Credit Scroll could go right-to-left, you might be all set. But, alas, it can't.

Vegas needs more "production / broadcast" features, like the ability to do these simple scrolls.

Vegas has had the ability to do this since the very first version, guys....
Create a long text event, use the text position tool to keyframe it across the bottom, top, or sides of your screen. Very simple.
If you need a demo veg, search "ticker tape" on the VASST site, you'll find a couple.

I was just trying to do this a few weeks ago and couldn't get it working to my satisfaction. Sure would be nice to have a ticker text type. Can you give the URL to the web site you mention as having sample veg files that do this? Thx.

I haven't liked the smoothing of the velocity any time I've tried to use Pan/Crop (I haven't played with Track Motion yet :( ). Hmm... that sounds confusing. Let me explain....

Pan / Crop always seems to slow down at the very end of the motion range. I would want a very mechanical point A to B, with no change in motion speed. Know what I mean? Yes, I've tried using linear versus smooth in/out.

EDIT - Ok, just tried this with Track Motion - it does the same thing. It is faster in the middle of the movement, and slower on each end. :( While that's cool when you want some natural-looking movement, it doesn't work when you want something to keep the same speed throughout its motion. It looks too much like it's accellerating, then slowing down before it would ultimately stop (whether you see it stop or not).

Ok... I feel like a fiend on the EDITs, but, I just realized if I turn "Smoothness" to 0% on both ends of the motion, it does what I'd want it to do.

Change the "Smoothness" setting on each keyframe to ZERO and you will eliminate the speed-up/slowdown.

Personally, I just use the Positioning tab on the Generated Media itself. Set the first keyframe just off the right edge and set the second keyframe at the end just off the left edge. You'll have fewer limitations than if trying to use Track Motion or Pan/Crop. Download the examples Spot mentioned.

will get you to the search for Tickertape stuff. There are a couple others if you search for Ticker tape

I've been waiting for the ability to insert a graphic/logo into a credit roll. Will V6 do that?

No. You'd have to manually place it. Cayman Graphics tools will allow you to insert a graphic in the middle of a credit roll.

Hi Spot,

Simple for you, not for me! I think you helped me on a previous post, but am having trouble getting a proper crawl made. I'd like to crawl text continuously for about :45 or so, repeating the same few words. Keyframe method wouldn't do it for me, must be missing something somewhere... also, if you just use keyframes for in and out of the video, how do you control the speed? (only if you get time) (any body else?)

thanks

Masmedia, email me the veg you've created, I'll send back correct.
It's creating a crawl wide enough to fill the screen plus at least 2 more times it's width. The, you'll either start the crawl repeat on a new track, or loop it, depending on whether you want a continuous rhythm.
