creating a hilite rectangle for multimedia

Hello,
I'm using VV3 to create product demos of software. I often want to hilite something on the screen (such as a menu pick) with a yellow rectangle.

I have been creating the rectangle in Macromedia Fireworks and bringing it into VV3 as a .png file. Then I have to use the pan/crop tool to squash it into just the right size and move it around the screen. This is pretty awkward because of the "backwards" nature of the pan/crop tool.

Is there some way to create and/or position the rectangle in the same maner as Sonic Foundry Text (generated media)? I'd like to bypass Fireworks and actually create the rectangle in VV3 if possible, too.

Thanks,
Jeff W

GG,
Thanks, I hadn't seen that. Still kinda cumbersome to get just the right size and line thickness, though. Are there any add-on tools out there? Perhaps 3rd party?

how about the border filter- have you tried that?

where do you find the border filter?

In the Video FX

Thanks... but that doesn't quite get it. Will be useful for me later, though!

Use track motion to get around the backward nature of clip pan/crop.
In Text/Backgrounds there is a great rectangle called Blue Movie Boarder. Pick a color, set the thickness and your set. As you'll see, it's made with the gradiant bg media generator.
Uncheck maintain aspect ratio in your track motion window and your ready to go.
Opacity fades to bring it on and off. Or flash it with Composite Level Keyframed Envelopes
You might get creative with filters like glow, lightrays, lensflare, pinch/punch, others.
Or combine them with a rectangle.
Kinda crazy when one starts to think of all the ways you could call attention to a specific area of the screen with Vegas.

Thanks!
So, if I understand you, I need to insert an empty event on a new track. I'll add a border using video FX. Then use track motion to squash the track (and therefore border) down in to the size and placement I want.

So you either have to give this border it's own track or make sure to keyframe the change just before the border should show up on the screen, right?
