Creating copy protected DVDs

BrianJK wrote on 5/17/2011, 7:12 PM
Despite how easy it seems to walk through most copy protection schemes, I have a client who is adamant about receiving our latest work on copy protected DVDs. The few suppliers I spoke to today (in the Toronto area) make it sound like a big deal involving specific (as yet unknown) authoring software, tape drives and bags of money.

My client is suggesting Roxio Secure Burn software. That's a new one on me.

What is the shared wisdom here ?

Thanks,
Brian

Roxio Secure Burn is for data DVDs. I don't think it is meant to be a solution for DVD-Video discs. I might be wrong, but at no point does Roxio mention video in any of the blurb to do with Secure Burn.

Notwithstanding the fact that your client is an idiot, copy protect flags can be set during mastering in DVD Architect that will be implemented by the replicator service you choose. Yes, it costs more to copy protect, and with little tangible benefit. Be sure to test some proof discs on several players before committing to a larger run.

Just show him a few ripped movies from the big boys and ask him if they can't protect their million dollar movies how well does he think his will be protected?

unfortunately, as musicvid pointed out, your client is an idiot. there is, afaik, NO guaranteed copy protection, and that which there is doesn't stand up to even the most casual copying with any number of so designed software products on the market..

better yet, try and get a grasp of why your client thinks they need copy protection and post back - i'm sure among the denizens of this group there's one or two who can come up with a coherent argument for you ;-)

Copy protection is an expensive joke.
If I can see it, I can copy it.

I really like Dibbkd's (name not specified in the profile...) response. I'll add it to my repertoire:

"if they can't protect their million dollar movies how well does he think his will be protected?"

Thanks to everyone for their input. I used the "if they can't protect their million dollar movies" argument among others and the customer relented on the need for copy protection.

FWIW - Secure Burn from Roxio might be worth a second look FOR DATA DISCS but it makes the discs unreadable outside of the Windows environment.

Thanks again

I agree with all that has been stated.

Why don't you just use the copy protection flags in DVDA and print a copy protection warning on the disc and just give it to him?

I agree with this statement, but would add one thing: Let him pay for it. Some people just won't listen to logic and need expensive lessons for things to sink in.

Take one of the production discs, put it in a drive and call up a simple DVD copy program that doesn't break the Macrovision. Show him that warning message that says that the disc can't be copied and pat him on his fat little head.

Sheesh...

I'd suggest that you say "I can do this & set it up for copy protection when it's duplicated. Then you can take your disc to your own duplicator you want & have them do it for you. It will cost a little more on my end though."

Then put that ball in his court & maybe he'll come back saying it's to expensive.

We have Fortium Patronus available at my workplace, and the ability to perform large scale duplication on site. Patronus is about as difficult as it gets to rip, but I don't think it helps much with analog copying. Like the others said, if someone wants to copy it bad enough, they will. If you're interested in Patronus though, please contact me through my profile info.
