I don't use the Credit Roll.
I use the Title tool, importing text from whereever, and then use Pan/Crop to roll the credits when I need to use a roll function.

I had some CG floating across the screen and found it looked bouncy (staggered) it wasn't smooth. I know there are at least two ways to make text move. Could this be the result of using track motion instead of / or changing placement with the text. Or, maybe trying to use both at the same time.

Placement Tab in the Text Generator.

Use a Negative "-" on the placement numbers to get the wordage OUT of the frame. Adjust x:y coords until you are happy. It works a treat.

Vegas credit roll has limited facilities but I find it fine for end credits. To get smooth motion you must use uncomplicated fonts such as Trebuchet MS, Poor Richard, Arial, and not stuff like Times New Roman with its little flourishes. The colour of the text has to have contrast with the background and white on black is excellent, and yellow over images generally is good. Red over images is less effective (I find) and green doesn't have enough contrast over scenic backgrounds. But all that is open to easy experiment.

The Vegas credit roll looks fine as end credits on our DV feature--but it still drives me crazy that you can't go back and insert a line in the middle of a long credit list. If you have to insert an assistant makeup artist at line 61 of 100 lines, you have to re-type the remaining lines 62 to 100. Agh.

No, that's not correct. Select a line, copy and paste. Then change text to whatever. You can paste in whole globs of space for whatever.

If you press the "insert" key it will insert a line.

I would probably crap my pants if V7 had a new titling upgrade but I suspect it is so heavily ingrained into the total scheem to change it would be an insurmountable task.

Maybe this is why they include a "lite" version of Boris Grafitti. Because the investment necessary to get up to that level for titling wouldn't be returned in revenues.. (But then I don't know how good titling is in competitor NLEs, though admittedly they are also more expensive than Vegas)

On the whole, though, it seems like Vegas's titling does some pretty good things. Not some of the really sophisticated things that specialty plugins do, but quite a bit nonetheless.

Really?

I'm very happy with the Vegas Titler. think of the hours it takes to learn something like Boris Graffiti, then compare it with what you can do after a little experimentation with the Vegas Titler. I've been able to create a myriad of very nice titles which I then save as vegs so I can reuse them. Yes, making them look good on the monitor sometimes takes awhile (I've found the Zenote Glow and Blur and Pixelan Creative ease help smooth things out quickly).

I long ago learned to stop using the Credit Roll tool and do what Douglas suggested.

My point is, however, with a little time spent great titles can be made in Vegas, whereas for a whole lot more money (versus free and built-in) and a whole heck of a lot more time spent mastering the interface, you can create titles not much better, but maybe a little fancier.
Serena wrote on 7/25/2006, 6:18 PM
Perhaps one also needs to ask what is the purpose of titles? Are they to entertain, or merely to inform. Pink Panther or Mystic River? Can you really do a the long roll of end credits with pan/crop? I would have thought resolution would suffer. Guess you can do dissolves between segments, but why do it the hard way?

I got my favorite credits from someone in this forum, although I'm sorry I can't remember who it was...

My favorite credit roll

Someone made this veg file, then you can just change the text to whatever you want.

Whoever you were, thanks, it's my favorite credit.

I've done massive rolls with the PLACMENT tab options - Not Pan/Crop.

I recemtly did a 150+ name roll from right to left as a lower 1/3. Smooth, no disintegration.

Good one to add to my knowledge base -- thanks Grazie.

That is great - can anyone remember this post? I tried a few searches but couldn't locate it.

biggles, the veg file and sound file are in the post from DGates in the My little titling experiment thread. It's almost at the bottom of the page.
BTW, you were the one who started the thread :-)

Grazie, can you show an example of this? When you say "lower 1/3", do you mean the lower part of the screen?

My other tool for titles/credits is Bluf Titler. 95% of the effects look "cheesy", but sometimes that's the look I'm going for. :)

What can I say other than so many threads, so little time!!

It gets worse - I had already saved the veg and buried it on my HD!! (So many folders so little time??)

"Grazie, can you show an example of this?"

I can email you a veg .. yeah?

" When you say "lower 1/3", do you mean the lower part of the screen?" Yes. Using the Placement X:Y, or T/M or P/C anywhere you want it.
dibbkd wrote on 7/26/2006, 8:03 AM
Edit: Sure, you can email it to me via Sony email.

-Thanks

Dibb? Fine, of course. But i also emailed thru' our Sony system. Did you get that from me? This stops "others" using your email here - yeah? Did you get my Sony-Mail?

I find it better to create a credit screen with Photoshop and import that and create the roll. More control over characters, spacing etc.
