Cropping in Vertical Direction?

Ken-Theriot wrote on 12/1/2020, 6:39 PM

I can crop a video in the horizontal direction exactly like a picture - just shaving off the sides without resizing or moving anything. But when I try to do the same thing in the vertical direction, it changes the size of the image rather than just shaving off the top and bottom. What am I doing wrong? (VP 16)

@Ken-Theriot - Please supply a ScreenGrab of your PAN/CROP Control Window.

Yes. Here is a pic of the Pan/Crop window AFTER I have successfully cropped the sides off. [Update: Thi smay have been before I cropped it horizontally.

Pan/crop tool is for panning and cropping. For resizing and positioning you should use Trackmotion or the PIPfx.

Yes. Cropping IS what I'm trying to do. My only question is "why can I crop it horizontally but not vertically?" As is shown in the video, it works perfectly fine to crop it on the horizontal axis. The picture doesn't change in size. But when I try to do that in the vertical direction, the size changes. This makes no sense to me.

You did not select Lock Aspect Ratio, therefore I showed you what's in the manual

cropping

resizing and positioning.

Ken-Theriot wrote on 12/2/2020, 2:13 PM

I KNOW that. Forget about the repositioning part of my video. I can use the PiP (and do) for that and it's fine. I want to CROP the video vertically as well as horizontally. Grabbing the handles in the middle of the SIDES of the image in the Pan/Crop window works great. Just drag them in and they shave off the extra on the sides. But trying to do the SAME thing with the handles in the middle of the top and bottom of the image RESIZES the image rather than cropping it. I just want to know WHY the cropping isn't happening in the vertical direction. Why is it resizing instead? When I'm doing the exact same thing as I did with the horizontal cropping.

That does not help. I don't WANT the aspect ratio locked. I want to have a square when I'm done so it fits in the box. I want to crop off the top and bottom. I was able to do it with the sides. But trying to do it with the top and bottom resizes no matter what I do.

OK turning off Stretch to fill frame at least stopped resizing. But now dragging up from the bottom edge crops in both the X and Y direction. By itself that isn't going to work. HOWEVER, I accidentally discovered that holding down the CTRL key while dragging up on the bottom edge DOES only crop top and bottom and leaves the sides alone. THAK YOU! Not sure shat control I'm overriding by holding down the CTRL button. But that will work!

You have MAINTAIN ASPECT RATIO selected. Turn that off.
