Crossfade playback problems on some CD players: What does Red Book say?

This is probably more of a question about CD players than CDA, but the CD I'm working on in CDA 5.0 is playing back differently on two devices (both made by Phillips) I have in my house. In particular, track transitions in the middle of crossfades are rendered differently on the two devices:

On my Phillips DVD 724 DVD player, which also plays CDs, there is an audible hiccup when the new track starts (i.e., the crossfade is not smooth).

On my portable Phillips 40 ESP 3 CD player, the crossfade is smooth across the track change.

Has anyone had any experience with this kind of thing? Is it simply that my DVD player doesn't support the standard correctly? What does the Red Book standard say is supposed to happen when track markers appear in the middle of some audio?

To follow up on my own post, and add a bit more information: I did some more investigation, and the problem definitely lies with the DVD player. I mean, the CD plays correctly on my PlayStation 2, for god's sake!

So the question becomes: how common are the bad players? And again, what does the Red Book have to say about this?

Generally speaking, how do you all test your CDs for compatibility with various players?

Short of testing your CDs on every player ever made you have the choice of:
1 - Doing nothing other that basic separated tracks
2 - Doin yor utmost to ensure that you (and your software) follows the standards
3 - If some people do have problems, have your answer ready and compelling, and hope they beleive you....

A while back I purchased a Panasonic dvd player so I could play MP3s. It not only did not support playing MP3s, it did not support any type of burned CDs by design.
I returned it and bought one that did.

I have experienced something similar.

On a LiteOn DVD player I can play copy protected CDs, but not with the Plextor CD writer.

I think Inspector may be referring to the early generation DVD players that didn't have the dual laser (ie a second one of the correct wavelength) to play CD-R(W)s.
