Only by overlapping the media further. You need to have enough media there to transit for a longer Xfade.
If you want to slow a transition, you can right click and insert a transitional envelope. However, this doesn't work with Xfades, only with actual transitions.
what I have is 2 30 minute wedding clips and I want to fade between them so I found where the cut point would be and split the video... the clips are over 3 minutes each, but I can't get a regular fade more than 0;07 length... Are you saying the ONLY way to get a longer one is to use a transition...?
Are you doing regular fades or crossfades? With a regular fade you can set the fade to be equal to the entire length of the event. With crossfades the fade is always equal to the overlap between the two events. If you want a longer crossfade, overlap them more. That's all there is to it. Transitions aren't necessary, but if you apply a transition the same thing applies; the transition will last as long as the overlap.
maybe I am not explaing this right... I have 2 30min clips I want to fade to and from.. like a live mixer only tracked... I can't go sliding the video back and forth or it won't line up with the audio, no? I just want to be able to crossfade between the clips at will and determine the length of time it takes me to do so....
The overlap MUST be longer if you want a SLOWER transition. you can get a longer overlap by extending the length of either event (assuming you have enough head/tail to do so). Just make the events longer so they overlap more if you can't move them to make the overlap larger.
Sounds like you are trying to do a two camera edit. Switching from one clip to the next with slow overlaps between them. Your 2 30 minute clips end up being one 30 minute clip with fades between the two clips as you desire. Is this correct?
If so in addition to the methods recommended above, I would consider using either Excaliber or Ultimate S. With both products you can split the video where you want and set a default crossfade length. After editing, this default can be edited.
