Curious --:--:--:-- timecodes

Hi all,

My DVDs created with DVDA are working fine. These are DVD+R and the burner used is Philips DVDRW228.

I have a curiosity question :

When playing on standalone home DVD players or software DVD players (like PowerDVD or WinDVD) the timecode information on the sequence are not filled. I have systematically "--:--:--:--" in the information area.

The files I authored in DVDA are processed in Vegas 4 and exported using the DVD PAL template from the Render As menu entry.

When playing my bought or rent PRO DVDs the sequence timestamp changes every seconds. This is a normal behavior.

My feeling is it is like there are no keyframes inside the MPEG sequence. I still can perform forward and rewind with the remote control.

Does anybody have an idea ?

I read the thread you mentionned and I am not really in this aspect ratio / audio mix case. The DVD I authored hold approx 6 sequences of 25 minutes each MPEG2 encoded with the DVD PAL template from Vegas. I just tell DVDA in the Optimize menu to encode into AC-3 Stereo to reduce space.

It is not really the same case as your mentionned thread. Each sequences are drag&dropped from the explorer window to the menu one.

My feeling is I should have to concatenate first the sequences into a long one in Vegas and use chapters marks to have the timecode running on the DVD player. Is it right ?

Well, I guess you onlu read part of the thread so I have copied in the part that deals with a workaround to have timecodes displayed on a stand-alone:

"... The program placed different assets in different VTS but time didn't show. What I had to do was to edit the title playback value in the VIDEO_TS.IFO file (subsection VMG_PTT_SRPT, Title playback type (for each VTS) from 84 (not one_sequential) to 0 (one_sequential)."

I forgot to mention that it works with both multiple files and with scenes within the files. The program to use for edit is "ifoedit" (freeware, do a search in google).

That's a good tip.

I've read many of the threads in this forum but I've not read whether this will be one of the features of DVD A 1.0 that will be altered with the upcoming bug fix. Does anyone know?

Very good news !

But I just tried the tip given by vulcan and it works well. I have the time running now on the DVD player display and info box.

My amateur production is more finished this way :-)
