Custom Bin Thumbnails = Dumbnails?

AVsupport wrote on 11/6/2018, 11:19 PM

I have a series of clips in a custom bin; For one reason or another the clip names were reset to 001 middle through the shoot. I can sort them properly in the 'Details' window by 'Timecode In' > descending, but when I throw all clips on the timeline, the Clip Name sorting takes over and clips start with 001.

When I go back into Thumbnail view, the custom sorting has not been honoured and sorting is default by clip name.

Is this a bug or a feature not well implemented? [16.307]

my current Win10/64 system (latest drivers, water cooled) :

Intel Coffee Lake i5 Hexacore (unlocked, but not overclocked) 4.0 GHz on Z370 chipset board,

32GB (4x8GB Corsair Dual Channel DDR4-2133) XMP-3000 RAM,

Intel 600series 512GB M.2 SSD system drive running Win10/64 home automatic driver updates,

Crucial BX500 1TB EDIT 3D NAND SATA 2.5-inch SSD

2x 4TB 7200RPM NAS HGST data drive,

Intel HD630 iGPU - currently disabled in Bios,

nVidia GTX1060 6GB, always on latest [creator] drivers. nVidia HW acceleration enabled.

To sort clips in a bin you need to use a storyboard bin.

AVsupport wrote on 11/7/2018, 5:51 AM

At that time (second day shoot) I wanted to add the clips, my storyboard bin already contained 130 clips I didn't want to mess with. Seems odd. Sure there's ways around (which I've used) but it's neither intuitive nor practiclal

You can create many additional storyboard bins, though only one "Main" which is the only one synchronized with the timeline.

Oops, I see there is an issue with the storyboard bins where the clip order used in the bin is not maintained when dragging that bin into the timeline. I just reported it.

thanks for confirming and actioning @Marco.

Workaround: CTRL-A, drag and drop files. Sort order maintained for either storyboards or "regular" bins.

Though it doesn't fix MVP, I use a program called "filerenamer." Works very well for me. I have to frequently use it, as my C100mk2 always resets #s to 00001 when you put a new card in, unless you're saving as MP4 files. Using this program, I can assign sequential file names. There is a free version but it's missing some features (which I find important). https://download.cnet.com/File-Renamer-Basic/3000-2248_4-10306538.html

At closer investigation, it appears like the problem is buried in the Sequence of Events:

- If you [Select: All] first and sort later, the original (by: name) sorting is maintained if you Drag&Drop onto the timeline.

-If you Sort First and Select:all afterwards, the new order is maintained onto the timeline.

Either way, the sorting is not honoured when you return from detail view back into normal thumbnail view. And that should get fixed also IMO

Well then there's always that elusive 'Vegas Production Assistant Pro' that could perhaps one day become a valued asset in a VP (being: Pro) Bundle..which wouldn't hopefully autoexpire at the next version up ;-) https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/gb/vegas-production-assistant-pro/ but not that I own this
