Custom made highlight mask button overlay help

I have a song selection menu on my screen of a concert that I shot for a friend of mine. Each object on the menu which has the song title on it and nothing else, links to the respective song. I made a custom highlight mask overlay in photoshop which I want to use to highlight whatever song the user chooses, to be controlled by the remote arrows. I've gotten everything to work successfully, except for one small issue. When I use one of the four arrows on the remote to move this "highlight mask button", everything, including the song title on the object changes to the same color. I want the song title to remain it's original color, and ONLY the "highlight mask button" overlay to illuminate to the specified color. Is there any way to effectively "decouple" the two? In other words, have the "highlight mask button" show up on top of the object with the song title and have the song title NOT change to the same color as the "highlight mask button" ?

Hopefully, that makes sense, but perhaps my terminology is incorrect. Thanks for anyone who knows how to solve this dilemma!
