Custom rendering from the MainConcept encoders is disabled in Movie Studio.
That is a big part of the reason it is a $100 application. Vegas Pro has full custom MainConcept rendering options, unlimited tracks, and lots more.

in the knowledgebased help area it tells you to use this the custom render?

Would you direct us to the knowledgebase article that refers to custom rendering with MainConcept encoders in Movie Studio? I'm sure Sony would like to take a look at it if it is in error.

Adjusting the MPEG-2 render bitrate
Question
My encoded MPEG-2 files are blocky and/or are not sharp. How do I fix this?
Answer

Generally, higher bitrates will produce higher-quality results. You can make adjustments to the bit rate in all Vegas Pro software application. Go to File > Render As. Choose "MainConcept MPEG-2" from the Save As type list. Now click the Custom button. Click the Video tab. Towards the bottom of the window, you will see "Constant bit rate". This is where you can make adjustments to the bitrate. Trial and error will be your best guide as to what looks good and what doesn't look so good. Keep on thing in mind: bitrates that are too high may result in invalid files or files that do not play back properly.

How Do I: Using the MainConcept MPEG-2 plug-in
Question
How do I use the MainConcept MPEG-2 plug-in to render video and audio?
Answer

The MPEG-2 format is extremely complex. This document is not an attempt to explain every aspect of MPEG compression but to help you create high-quality MPEG-2 files for DVD.

The MainConcept MPEG-2 professional encoder plug-in exposes a significant number of controls. It is recommended that you use the preset render templates without modifying any of the custom parameters because these templates have been optimized for speed/image quality/file size as well as compliance with third-party DVD authoring applications.

In certain circumstances, you may want to change the custom settings. Please be aware that changing the custom settings will take some research and experimentation on your part. It is certainly possible to create noncompliant files if you change the custom settings (this is true with any render format). It is worth visiting the Sony Creative Software Forums if you wish to modify the custom settings.

High-quality MPEG encoding is an art that requires prioritizing bits, time, and quality. Setting all of the controls to the highest possible value will result in longer render times and may not improve, or may even reduce, the quality of the rendered file. Overly high bitrates may cause frames to be dropped by the playback device, or may result in a file that cannot be played back. Please feel free to experiment with the custom settings, but be aware that we cannot guarantee that the files you create will work with your destination application device. The Sony Media Software forum is a good resource for exchanging encoding information and questions with other users.

I think 3 is good. I used the same search. pull down vegas sub pull down vegas movie studio platinum 9.0 . I bought this software for this very thing. I downloaded the demo and it looked to have every thing vegas pro had other than the 4k and red one goodies, so for $150. looked like a good deal for HD edits...

As a new user, if you feel this wasn't made clear, you would be correct to contact Sony through the links at the top of the page and let them know your impressions.
No, I do not work for Sony, nor do I plan on doing so.

Another item that often isn't clear is that "Vegas Movie Studio Pro Pack" is not the same as "Vegas Pro". One is about $100, the other is about $500. Why SONY stuck "Pro" in the first name mystifies and confounds everyone.

Sony has yet to get back to me about this.
