The "Custom..." button for changing setting for the MainConcept MPEG-plugins (both MPEG-1 and MPEG-2) does not work. When I click it nothing happens. Using any of the saved templates works just fine.
Yeah, I just had a similar problem! I was converting a rendered DV file to PAL VCD format(ie the preset) and had no problem. I then tried doing a smaller version at quarter PAL resolution with mpeg1(180x144) with all settings the same. Vegas kept changing this to 192 x144 for some reason, and I figured that was near enough. Went to render and Vegas4 crashed on me! Man that has never happened before...
I have had similar crashes when rendering, particularly when changing the Main Concept MPEG2 settings. I have run MemTest overnight with no errors. I am now surface scanning my discs to make sure of them. Typically, MPEG2 crashes result in the compputer locking up or rebooting. MPEG1 renders stop and display an "unknown error" message, but I think I may have a problem with the source file here because it always stops renedering in the same place. MPEG2 crashes are random.

I had the same problem. SF tech support answered my tech support question as follows:
"The MPEG's custom button is a known issue we see from time to time. Getting into your Reg Editor and deleting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sonic Foundry\MC MPEG Plug-In, then re-opening Vegas will re-activate the 'Custom' button in Vegas 4's MPEG encoder. If you are not too familiar with reg editing, we would suggest calling our Technical Support Department at the number listed below. (Phone: 1900.40.SONIC)."
Perhaps this will help. If you don't feel comfortable editing the registry, then call their tech support number.
