Cut audio at different point than video

Dancar wrote on 7/28/2014, 5:12 PM
There is an editing technique that is common in films where the audio for a shot starts before the video for a shot. I can't figure out how to move the start or end of audio clip without also moving the start of the video. I can overlap them but then I get a fade, and I don't want a fade. I want the audio of clip 2 to begin a few moments before the video cuts. How do I do that?

I believe that is called a "J cut" I have never actually tried to do that, but if I were to try I would do this:

You need to Ungroup the audio from both clips. Once you do that you can cut each one at a different point. The audio from the first clip ends before the video does. The audio for the second clip starts before the video does.

Once you have done that ... Re-Group the audio/video together on both. Then you can slide them together. You may want a slight overlap of the audio instead of a hard cut.

However if you want something other than a cut for the video you may need to fiddle with the length of 'removal' of material. The undo command may be your friend.

Again, I've never tried this.

Simpler than ungrouping and regrouping, use the 'ignore event grouping' button at the top of the timeline.

Usually when i do this i overlap the clips first to create a fade and get the timing right. Then i both 'ignore event grouping' and disable ripple editing (this is about the only time i ever do disable it). I then drag the start of the second video farther to the right and the end of the first audio farther to the left to remove the fades. After this i turn off 'ignore event grouping' and re-enable ripple editing.

The first suggestion worked. Thanks!

I didn't find a "ignore event grouping" button, but I'm still on Vegas 10. The ungroup feature seems safer to me, because it only applies to the selected clip. I can see forgetting that grouping is turned off and messing something up.

I couldn't find that 'ignore event grouping' button at the top of the timeline" either on my version 13. Maybe that is a pro feature?

Sorry folks, perhaps it is "Pro" only. I haven't used the studio version since Video Factory 2. Ungrouping works fine. I just find it easier to do it with one button and then remember to turn off one button when i'm done, rather than trying to remember each pair of A/V events and regroup them. But alas, if you don't have the button, it's moot anyway.

It's certainly there with MSP Suite 13. Bottom of the screen, click the Config cog and you'll find 'Ignore Event Grouping'.

Kelly (Chienworks), I think the (unpopular) user interface changes introduced with Movie Studio 13 did away with some of the standard icons that it always shared with Vegas Pro. It sounds like the functionality is still there, but must be selected from a drop-down, rather than directly by toggling an icon on or off.

I bought Movie Studio 13 for my daughter, but we've never gotten around to installing it.

I agree. I mostly use 9 and like the interface a lot. 10 had some ... unfortunate ... changes in the 3rd party effects. 11 scared me, and it wouldn't run on my hardware anyway. The screenshots of seen of 12 & 13 just make me wonder what in the world was going through the minds of the UI designers. I think that even if i do get a 64 bit workstation running Win7 at some point i'll stick with 9 anyway.

In Movie Studio 10 the Ignore Event Grouping button is in the main toolbar, roughly in the centre. Ctrl Shift U also works.
