cutting sections out in timeline?

Still new to Vegas, so lots of questions...

I have a 2 hour clip in the timeline, both video and audio. I would like to cut certain sections out. Can't figure out how to do this.

For example, I want the first 5 mins, then cut out the next 10 mins, then keep the next 2 mins,,,etc.
Also, how do I ensure the video and audio stay together when cutting (ie when I cut video, appropriate audio gets cut)

Well you can drag the cursor over the area you want out (it will highlight the out area yellow) right click the yellow then hit delete. If you are in auto ripple (everything) it will cut out the yellow then joint the two clips. The audio will be ok as long as you do not click the icon on top that says (Iforgot the name of that icon) If the audio is out of sync the clips will turn red, then right click and select syncronize move and it will re align. Practice on some old clips to see what happens. You can also hit the "S" key where you want to cut. then click the clip to highlight it and right click then hit dlete. there will be a gap between the two clips. If you want to eliminate the gap right click in the gap then hit delete. Vegas has about 100 methods to do things depending on what you like best.

JJKizak beat me to it with his post, but here's what you need:

The most straight forward way to do this is to position the cursor at the point you want to make your first cut. Select as many tracks as you want by clicking on the first track -- e.g., the video track, then holding down the Control key and clicking on as many additional tracks as you choose.

Once all the tracks have been selected (they'll change color as you select them,) press the "S" key and all the tracks you have chosen will be split. Now move the cursor to the out point and repeat this process.

You now should have three sections of time line. Use the mouse/Control key to select all the bits you don't want -- probably the middle section -- right click the mouse on one of the selected bits, click "Delete" on the drop-down menu.

If you mess up, use the "UnDo" function on the "Edit" drop-down menu.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like you need some basic tutorial help. Highly recommend the manual, but after that, check out

And here's an oldie but a goodie, with some video training from NAB a few years back. I think you might enjoy this:

Another option that I find useful, especiially for multiple videos and audio is to left click in the gray portion of the timeline area and hit the "s" key to split the tracks all at the same place. Then go further down the line to where you want the next cut to be and repeat. Simple and very effective.
