seems to me that you'd be well served with Ultimate S Pro.
it's got an import files to media min function that maintains the structure of the file system, just point to the root folder, and tell it to import. It's in the setup tab of USPro.
I understand the save recommendation, but I also don't understand why there's not a confirmation window for the delete unused media option. That's burned me in the past also. There are much more insignificant features that ask for confirmation. Just a simple "are you sure?"
bob, i save religiously, but not after loading every clip('s). in this case i'd pre-sorted takes in an explorer folder, then imported them to a bin, and was about to do the same with another pre-sorted batch, only hit the lightening bolt by mistake.
i mean having a confirmation dialogue on such a 'major' process (which isn't used that frequently) strikes me as rather reckless (both vegas and myself!).
dave, exactly where can i find an explanation of ult.s.pro's methodology? are you saying i could point to a folder in win explorer (that i already created along with subfolders and the various clips within them) and simply tell it to import folder and subfolders as bins?

btw. having now imported everything, i've made the veg read-only. from here on i'll be saving working copies of the original!

My point was we don't have one, we will not have one until the next release at least. All I could suggest was ways to mitigate what we're stuck with.
I generally have the opposite problem. I forget to zap stuff I didn't use in the project. Then ages later I restore the archived project and Vegas has a hissy fit over missing assets. I'd like Vegas to be smart enough to differentiate between media on the T/L and media in the project but unused. I've wasted a fair amount of time restoring clips that I'd not actually used. Also having 'stuff' in the project impacts load time so I zap regularly.
All of that said I can see how a zap could be a very dangerous thing in your case.

Well, in the same way that you can have an AUTO save working [Edward Troxel's] and a means that is bedded into Vegas [Unused COUNT search and "Bin" it!] - Vegas has the options to utilize Scripts. Having scripts and the development of Extensions are great to utilize. Maybe having scripting and so on, has allowed for the development of these simple instructions to be left off the "list"?
IMO, the void that always needs filling - "continuous improvement" - then that is the one of reacting fast and appropriately to User expectations to changes in Vegas, towards what we want. Fast tracking and the listing of GOOD IDEAS here and posted to SCS would serve as a great way to achieve Open comms with all of us - including SCS. I asked for a better "live" FX Event Icon - in VP9, it's now there!
A simple WARNING sign - front and centre - being executed, is typical of the example of the void I mention here. I'm with you Leslie, but the requirements for change, after eight years of using Vegas and being here, are the ones I'm after.
I can see You use Ultimate S Pro Setup Tab - please advice me.
I'm trying to apply SET UP MEDIA BINS functions to existing project. My target is to achieve that Ultimate S will save my existing project with all media according to folder structure prepared with SetUpMediaBins Function. Is it possible at all ?
What I'm doing :
1) opening project with some video, audio and stills files
2) configuring Ultimate S (check Setup Media Bins)
3) using preset wchich will create new folders structure as below :
ROOT / Audio
/ Video
/ Still images
4) run function (APPLY).
Ultimate S creates folders structure on disc but files from project are not saved to the folders. So can' achive target. I have heard that Excalibur script has autosave function. I'm trying to use Utlimate S to organize incremental save function (manually save entire project with new name but media should be placed in already prepared folder structure). Is it possible with Ultimate S ? or maybe You know other solution ?
There's no way to avoid that unfortunately, every application works that way. Maybe some have a way of saving history , PS maybe?
There's some caveats to using Undo, not everything is Undo-able. Of some concern is there's some evidence to suggest that something can go wrong with the Undo process leading to nasty project corruption e.g. media reference being swapped and unfixable. I've had this happen several times and I had to go back through several project versions to get rid of the problem. I was mighty glad though I didn't have to start from the beginning so making incremented project version backups has saved me a lot of angst.
