Dark/Dull DV Capture/preview and render to .mpg/.wmv

The Short:
--------------------------------
When capturing from DV camera via firewire, the captured video looks dark, muddy and much less vibrant on the computer monitor than what is displayed on the camera's LCD. "Printing" this captured video back to tape yields the original vibrant quality when viewed from camera's LCD or television set.

a) How do I "render" the vibrant quality to a .mpg or .wmv or similar for viewing on the computer?

b) And it would be nice to be able to preview the vibrant colors with VV.

The Long:
--------------------------------
Using a Sony TRV27 (MiniDV) connected to a P4-1.8ghz (512mb RAM) via Adaptec DuoConnect IEEE1394. VV3.0c, WinXPProSP1, DirectX8.1, NVidiaGeForce3Ti200 (v 41.09 ref drivers), Trinitron-type monitor. The hardware should be adequate? Capturing with the default SFVidCap3. Captured video's histogram is normal, well distributed. Googling revealed others with similar DV capture problems. I don't believe it is isolated to SF's capture products. Some solutions include "adjust monitor brightness", "adjust monitor gamma", "adjust video's blah blah blah". Adjusting those things still doesn't yield as nice as quality as the camera's LCD. Am I to instruct recipients of a rendered .mpg to "adjust your monitor's gamma before watching please..."

I've seen a similar thread here, but I'm unclear on the answer:

c) Is this something to do with colorspaces and the way TV/LCD displays colors differently than a computer monitor? Any links "beginner-intermediate" level hyperlinks would be appreciated. (Thus, the reason for a view in external monitor option?)

d) Printing/rendering back to DV seems fine since no vibrancy is lost. Rendering to .mpg or similar format yields dull video. Could the Video Output-VideoFX "Levels" or "Color Balance" filter be the solution to all of this (bypassing when printing to DV tape)? Any recommendations on settings for success?

thanks,
Mike
